Frozen cables!!

Put the boat in the water today. Started right up,water pump working ,dog loaded. As I put it in gear it's a little stiff but goes ok but throttle cable is frozen and won't move.
Does anyone have a good way to treat them so I can avoid this problem? The boat is covered but sits outside. We had freezing rain between the 44 degrees yesterday and this mornings 21 degrees. I'm sure I could thaw them out but don't need to have the problem again on Lake Erie in this weather.
Any Ideas, Thanks , John

you can thaw them out but once water is in cables you will have to change them out try some really good spray and work it in but in long run change them

My experiance is the same as Rich stated......once they are voided they are toast. They will freeze in the winter and rust up during the summer. I have seen them soaked for months submerged in an oil/diesel bath and they still were not rejuvenated. You need to replace them ASAP.

That is if it really is the cable that is frozen up...make sure it's not somethiing else in the linkage that is blocked with ice or something else?

I had that problem with my mud motor and my buddy injected some antifreeze into the cable. (The boat was kept at his cottage.) It got me through the season but I had to replace the cable the following spring.

John, I've never had cables freeze, but I've had problems at the throttle itself. The handle would get super stiff in cold weather. So I started taping a hand warmer to it and wrapping it in a plastic bag before towing the boat to a hunt. It helped a lot.

I have a Little Buddie heater in the boat and put that on the control to make sure it wasn't iced. I disconnected the cable from the motor and the throttle linkage to the carb was good. I'm planning to make a tiller with controls to make this fowl weather operation easier.
I'll let you know how it goes, John
