Fun morning to be a dad...

Have been letting the man cub do a little shooting with dads iron but had to warm up in the fog with the red rider.

Have always told him his first duck can be on the water but the next one has to be on the wing. Well we lit a good bunch in the decoys(in a rig I carved before he was born) handed him the gun and said pick one and pull the trigger. He made the most of his opportunity and piled up a limit with one pull of the trigger.hehehehe There were birds floppin all over the place, dad yelling don't shoot any more!! Good morning to be a 7y/o maybe even a better morning to be a dad! A proper iron for him is already on the way!!

Cool Mark. Man I remember being that age. Tossing and turning the nite before the hunt. Excited to just get to go shoot and loving the smell of the spent shells in the cool morning air. It's probably safe to say he's hooked... ha ha

he looks to have grown 4" since we planted all those trees this Spring. Tell him keep on shooting, he can shoot my SBE this year if he wants.

Way to go Boys! That is one great story. I am sure the two of you will retell it quite a few times.
Looks like you have enough water. cover looks good too.
Keep us posted as you go along.
This is going to be a great year for the new generation of the DHBP.

Ah yes, the 'skillet shot'...cut my teeth the same way, but needless to say I did not limit out with that one shot. Must be those #7 steel.

Great job to both of you!

Chuck

Great pictures Mark. The best hunt I have made in my life was one where I did not fire a shot. My son's first youth hunt he limited on ducks in about 30 minutes. He turns to me and said "Dad, I wish you could have brought your gun". I told him that I had just made the best hunt of my life. I didn't need a gun. I only wish I would have taken more picture in the field. Great post.

Mark, that is fantastic. Loved that story. The man cub will be just fine. Glad to see the two of you doing so well. Thanks for taking the time to post this. Please congratulate your son!

Enjoy those days while you can. They are gone all too fast. Congrats to you and your son, great hunt.

Awesome Mark! My sons got me into duck hunting later in their youth, but I remember holding the youngest in my arms and the oldest by the hand as we walked in the dark to our ground blind to hunt turkeys for the first time. No pictures to share...only memories that were captured in my heart. I remember their first deer...their first salmon...and the smiles that remind me that hunting and fishing with my sons is not about me. Please keep up the good work!

That is great Mark. I didn't realize you had a man cub that age. Good stuff, lucky kid.

Yeah, those court ordered DNA tests finally pinned Mark down :)

Congrats Mark. There are a lot of great memories ahead for you and your son.

There's not a better father-son bonding experience than hunting. Something the two of you can share for a very long time. When my son was 8 I found a little beaver pond that had some wood ducks using it. So we built a small brush blind and with his .410 and hand loaded shells we waited for the woodies to come to roost. Sure enough here they came, wave after wave, a lot more than I expected. My son and I had a blast and my son claimed his first duck a beautiful drake woodie. I didn't have any waders or even decoys at the time. I took off my shoes and socks and waded in the cold water after the ducks. You talking about youthful excitement...for both of us! He's a senior in college now and still hooked on duck hunting. We have since greatly expanded our hunting places and equipment since then. But anytime I go by the site of that original brush blind it brings a smile to my face. (OK, I'll have to admit a tear as well.)

FANTASTIC. Tell him congrats and great job getting him out shooting some ducks. It is always fun taking your own kids out on youth hunts. Nothing better. Tell him that Skeeter says congrats too. Hank

Very cool Mark. Funny as all get out. I can see him lining up and and saying can I shot another? And you shouting DON'T SHOOT! with a bit of panic in the vibrato.

A week from Saturday I'll be having my annual opening morning chat with my "ole man". My first one was 1965. He's been gone 11 years now but I always make time to thank him for what he taught me and thank god for one more season.

Take care,

Ed L.

Mark, thanks for sharing that story...that smile says it all. Tell that young man congrats.

Tony, I have to concur with you

last year I posted about my son's first youth hunt where he limited in 15 minutes, it would have been sooner if he could have "skillet shot" them all, but like Mark, I only allowed that for the first one. The screams of joy and the look on his face will never be forgotten. Thanks Mark for posting this as it brought back a great memory for me as well.

Good luck this year.
