Game Strap

I'd like to get a new game strap for this hunting season. I've had one for years where you slide the head down a stiff wire hoop that forms a slot but ducks fall off it if you are not careful, especially if it's full. Digging around I've found a lot of guys are using paracord to make straps that hold the ducks by their feet. I've seen leather ones advertised too Anybody have any recommendations? The link below is one I was thinking about ordering and thought someone here might provide some input. Thanks.

That one looks nice - works on their necks too. I have a freebie avery one that is that style and it works well, ruffles their neck feathers though.

For photo ops I'm interested in ones that go around the ducks ankles (do ducks have ankles?) rather than around their necks where it messes up their feathers.

Where there you go then, I thought I was the only one who worried about messing up their neck feathers.

Yes, ducks have ankles :).

Eric - I just bought one of those braided deals, and they work just fine, but I told the maker "Why not place a strong steel O ring at the middle of the strap to hang the full strap?" I have very good
leather strap, I bought years ago from the Old Guide. Has the strong O ring to hang the full strap, can't beat it. I bought the braided as a back up, and well worth $12. It's very light weight, yet
very strong, and takes up almost no room in my inner parka pocket. Actually I use it also for game birds, and Squirrels (the Other White Meat). Game bags keep game way to warm for my liking.

Eric,

I too quit using the long key hole wire loop for the same reasons. The one I have now uses the rings, like pictured in your link. The only thing different with mine is instead of paracord, mine has six narrow web straps with the rings attached at the ends of the narrow straps. The narrow straps have a ring on each ends so will hold a total of twelve birds. There is a wider section of strap in the middle to serve as a hand hold.

In my opinion, the paracord ones in your link are a bit nicer.

Last I knew, my Son is making stuff like that. Neat thing, is he will make a custom one for you.

I have a couple different ones similar to the ones in the ad. They work very well.

Jon

I have been making a similar one for 10 years but mine uses loops of cord instead of the rings on the end of the single cord. Three loops out each side of the handle. When they get bloody just throw it in the washer with your jeans...good as new.

Looks to me like the "ring" model would cinch tighter on the small legs of birds. Mine works great on necks.....but will"ruffle" the feathers. :)

I have a 10-loop strap from Heavy Hauler that's been bulletproof for the last 3 seasons. Just an idea if you decide not to make your own.

Eric,

The pics of the lanyard in your link will work great for hanging ducks & geese by their "ankles."

Have one that's similar made of leather. It's in the carry pouch in one of my goose blinds, so I'll have to dig it out to find out who makes it .... but same principle. Got a chuckle out of the "Strong enough to haul eight honkers" claim in the advertising. I don't doubt it, but God help me if I ever have to haul eight honkers on a game strap a couple of hundred yards across a stubble field ! ;-)

Have you thought about a bucket to throw them in? A bucket fits 2 limits at least.

Tod

My needs are mostly for walk-in hunts where I try and keep weight and bulk of items to a minimum. Although a bucket would work I like the thought of pulling something a little smaller out of my back pack when needed.

Sounds like you need a bigger backpack..... :)

You ever walk far with a limit of ducks swinging around off of your back? I did it once through an Alaskan alder bog. All future walk in hunts had the birds stuffed into the pack in a contractor grade trash bag. I would still hang the birds if need be to keep them out of the muck, but for the walk out they will always be secured to prevent dangerous balance oscillations.

Long walk out's, with birds held by the leg, will result in lost birds sooner or later. A well balanced strap front and back, holds a heck of a lot of ducks and geese. Cranes - Good luck.
Is it hard work? You bet, but well worth it, and all part of Why we Do what we Do. It's a good tired, like taking yer time draggin' a deer. A Full strap means NO Shoot Gun Shells to carry out!

I was just trying to come up with the most offensive way to carry ducks that I could. :). Maybe in the bucket with your moto battery. :).

Tod

I gotcha. Along those lines how about 6 little duck sized pine coffins. That would be another means of carrying them out of the marsh.

Possibly the only way to top that would to have Tod carrying the bucket. :>) :>)

the one in the link looks like a nice ankle holder. As you guessed photos will be much nicer via the ankle vs. the neck. see if they have some smaller hardware to use as their loops you will be much happier with a 1/4" loop vs that at least 1/2" loop.
