Getting close to the end. Upland only

I just was thinking of the time you were waiting your turn to pick out your pup. Then , Tim, it was the name and finally the countless hours of training/togetherness. Deuce has rewarded you many times over already and look at what is called Total Satisfaction for you. Congratulations on a fine season. Fun to know you are already on your countdown for next fall.

I duck hunted up on Lake Thompson once this fall. We only saw 2 pheasants that morning. Every place else we hunted we saw and heard dozens of birds. I don't know if that area has come back as much as other areas to the south and west have. A decade ago there was some great hunting around that area.

The snowshoes are my BIL's, he use to do a lot of winter hiking. He's been having some back issues this year and hoped they would make it easier for him to at least get out to block. The snow depth is so inconsistent that they actually ended up making it tougher on him.

He is an intense dog. I said "treat" to get him to look at the camera. I could feel his eyes burning through me. :) He did get a treat after this so I didn't lie to him.

Tod,
As much fun as I've been having this season I'm ready for it to end. The last few days have taken a lot of the 'go' out of me. Deuce would gladly keep going.

Al,
I went far too long without a dog. The situation wasn't right so maybe all that time was for the best. In a month or two, once it warms up a little, training will start back up. We need to break a few bad habits and to keep him in shape. In the meantime I will think of names just in case a pup jumps out at me. I'm not sure yet but I think 2 would be a lot of fun. Isn't it amazing how easy it is to forget those devilish puppy teeth once you see a dog doing its job well.

Tim, you are so right. Those hypodermic needles are there just for fun! Drawing blood, I guess is fun---for them.

I wanted to tell you, Tim, that I was very impressed with the tail feathers on a couple of those birds. Did they have some decent sized spurs? Looked like some great mature birds in that group.
Al

That first group was the oldest bunch we got this season. We had a good early hatch so even the young birds were well feathered. That made it nice early on. Last season it was hard some days telling young rooster from the hens.

I never l shot any birds with very long tail feathers this year. Just by chance of where the point was the best couple were shot by my nephew in law. I think one of them went 25". The best I got was around 23''. I think I missed out on a couple long ones when the birds came back tailless. Can't blame Deuce for that when I didn't kill them in the air.

I did get some good spurs. Deuce actually caught one with huge thick spurs. It flushed right into his face and he clamped on. Maybe the biggest wild rooster I've even seen. He was a half pound heavier then any other bird I weighted this year. Had he not got it by the neck I would have considered mounting that bird.

If we don't have too bad of a winter there should be some big birds next year. We left quite a few rooster out there to grow.
