Getting fired up! License, HIP, Stamp....

I've never had any major issues with the NC system, hard to find some of the specialty permits such as the late Canada goose permit but everything else is seamless almost, I go in and type my name and license number. All my info comes up and I just click renew for my hunting fishing license and then add the permits and stamps and pay.

Little more pricey through. I spend $53 on the license then plus what ever permits and stamps.
Bought my boys lifetime before they turned 1. $275 for babies then it goes up from there. Over $500 for me to get mine now.

OK...

This IS a rant.

Just came back from the town clerk office to purchase my senior NY hunting & fishing license, tags, etc.

What used to be called "The Sportsman's License", but that was to easy, so they had to make it difficult. Like government loves to Do and Do so very well.

The entire new licenses, tags, etc., are forty inches long! Plus the extra blank pages printed after the entire deal.

WTF! Instead of all licenses listed, on ONE piece of license "paper" material, as in the past. Each license is on it's own piece of license "paper" material.

What a fine example of conservation of resources.

The DEC must indeed be pround of such efficiency, which no doubt they had NO say in.

Also I could no longer pick the dates for my fishing license, as in the past, that made sense, and was customer friendly.

My 2020 freshwater fishing license expires 9-30-20.

My new fishing license had to be the date of purchase, 8-18-20, and expires 8-18-21.

So I now have two fishing licenses until 9-30-20.

If bureaucratic BS, of fixing what ain't broke has a zenith, NY wins the prize IMO.

I do feel very bad for the clerk that had to enter my info, as it was not easy for her at all. I cannot imagine trying to do it over the computer myself.

And to think when I hunted out west. I needed NO paper license. Just a ID number the wildlife officer would punch into his computer, and Bingo all info.

Well... I'm off to the liquor store for some relaxation medication.

The HIP#, and duck stamp can wait until tomorrow.

Steve,

I got a little fired up this morning too! For the first time since March, it was cooler outside than in my house! It rained all night so it actually smelled like fall was coming. However, we do have to make it through the worst of hurricane season first.

I do have a lifetime license and I already got my duck stamp (and how tickled I was to see that it is a black belly this year) so all I need is my HIP and I am good to go!

Dani,

The Black bellied Whistling Ducks do indeed look good. I'm unsure of where the hunting theme is shown. I thought that was supposed to be included in the artwork, like the decoy last year.

No dice with my HIP number by computer, or phone. "A high volume of calls at this time." Hopefully will get through before Sept.1st, if not squirrel hunting until I do.

Years back I was at a NWR, in line waiting my turn. Heard a guy behind me tell his buddy, "forgot to get my HIP #, lemme see yours and I'll change a few numbers." I have no idea if it worked, and really did not wanna know.

Eureka!

After several tries, over the phone. I now have a HIP #. All is in order, and ready to go.

The young person I talked with wanted my drivers license ID. I asked don't you mean my hunting license info?

No reply to that, but just spell your name, date of birth, and address.

I answered all the questions asked, and was given a # very quickly, much faster than in the past.

When I inquired about the website not working. He said we are having difficulty with the new system. Understandable.

We thanked each other, and wished each other a good day.

I'm uncertain if there are staff in the DEC office, or they are working from home.

Either way, in these trying times it still got done, and I'm thankful for that.

I was successful today on the phone as well. I now have my license, duck stamp, and HIP number. It was significantly more of a challenge this year than in years past due to the new system and my inability to create an online account due to a problem with the system. Regardless, I'm ready!

Logged on and re-registered , I had to wait to get my annual Lifetime to arrive to apply for my HIP. Just gave me a receipt number for the transaction. Typical NYS custer At least now the license year and HIP start on the same date. time to go brush up the blind and set some stands

License came in the mail today. Renewed interest in gunning ducks. I almost forgot why I was rebuilding the duck boat.

I am all set.
Lifetime Licence came in the mail a few days ago.
I had to call to get a hip number.
I went to the post office and bought a duckstamp today.
Licence and stamp is signed, Hip number is on the licence.

I have had a low digit number for the past eons, got the paperwork, sent everything back, as no one seems to be at f& w in delawhere. Still have not received anything back, with the season opening on sept 1. This could get a mite testy, folks! At least, I shall carry my signed fed duck stamp!!

I just got my NYS and realized there?s a back tag. I actually had to ask a friend because this years license came in like a CVS receipt. Are you supposed to wear a back tag while waterfowl hunting in NY? Or is there some exemption from wearing this yellow orange identifier during waterfowl?

Good morning, Vince~

Glad you found success!

I received my license etc in the mail earlier this week. The letters HIP are printed on one of the 3 apparent licenses - but no HIP number - even though I had gone through the usual questionnaire on-line when I bought my license.

So, I sent a second e-mail off to their info line. Never heard from the first I sent mid-August. Just an acknowledgement to my second inquiry thus far.....

I do not plan to carry a gun (I may help out on a Youth Hunt or 2 in September) until mid-October. If the web fails me, I will go the phone route. as my need approaches. As I've mentioned previously, I am just a curious beta tester. Sad to see such poor performance from yet another vendor.

All the best,

SJS

Steve- that HIP tag is the proof that you are registered for the period of time posted on the tag. With the new vendor/ system everything is just a little different, each license I received is separate so it does look like a CVS receipt.

Regards Tom

Steve,
On my NC license they do not print the HIP number because it is attached to my license number. All it says is HIP certification which shows that I am registered and when I go to renew my license it does the questionnaire for it.

Thanks very much, Ben - and Tom again~

Sounds like maybe I'm all set.

Wonder if I'll ever hear back from The Authorities....

Steve,

I dunno about that.

"Maybe" for sure.

If you hunt in a NY public area, where you must show your HIP #, and waterfowl ID card. How do you give a HIP# you do not know? Could be a head scratcher for the person taking yer info, and a Go To The Back Of The Line deal. Which for sure will make the others in line, (6 feet apart?) not so happy.

I suggest calling and getting the HIP #, which may take more than a few tries.

Ya gotta wonder. If golf and all other "sports" were this difficult. AKA jump thru hoops, how many folks would put up with it?

Seems more is done to discourage, than encourage hunting.

Best regards
Vince

Nick,

Ya gotta wear the back tag while hunting.

Only a few states still us it as a means to ID a hunter, or law breaker from a distance, maybe.

Did it all my years in PA, and now in NY.

Most states do not mandate a back tag these days, and it changes in other states.

If the birds did not work, it sure as hell was not cuz of the colorful back tag.

my 2 cents

Steve,

I have a question about the new NY licenses?

They are ALL on individual sheets, not one sheet of the license as in the past.

The clerk had me sign just one, the fishing license. Not Good.

When I got home. I signed All the licenses on the back.

As many a ticket has been written up here, for folks that DID NOT sign their license in the proper place.

This could be a PITA for some, and not a minor issue.

Best regards
Vince

Got a envelope in the mail today from the NY DEC.

Another very long yellow print out of seven sheets. One sheet has HIP written very small, but no HIP number.

So after I called, and got my HIP # this was sent.

Is this the only proof that is needed that I have a HIP #?

One more yellow sheet, with very small writing and info to cram into the already bountiful NY license library of must haves.

Glad they simplified things. [smile]
