getting ready for Lacrosse

I spent some time today upgrading my set up. I installed a Lowrance HDS7 in my sneak boat. I had a small handheld GPS mounted but wanted a larger screen. I went back and forth between and external mount for the transducer or epoxy and shoot thru the hull. I went with an external mount and added a custom guard around three sides of the transducer.

I haven't been out yet but I think I'll give it a go in the morning just to check things out.

You have no idea how important that guard will be, although I might suggest a little matching paint.

Not that I speak from experience or anything...

I am actually in the process of fabricating a boarding ladder to cover mine.

And, aren't ALL Labs lap dogs?

I like that idea. Recently installed transducer on my seaark and was worried about wrecking it on either stumps or ice. Keep us posted on how that works . Did you construct it from aluminum ?

Hey Dave -

Next time you have a project like this, let me send you down some double sided tape. I made a mount for my transducer and mounted it several years back with double sided foam tape. Still going strong. The good stuff, not the cheap stuff. We make ours where the foam is the adhesive so there is no possible foam/adhesive interface split that can occur. People forget that tape can do as good of a job as mechanical fixturing for many tasks. No drilling of holes through a perfectly good watertight hull. Heck, I forget this sometimes as well.

I constructed it from some .045 thick galvanized sheet metal. The material was some scrap laying around the shop. My preferred material would be same thickness but out of stainless steel. Well see how well this one works first. So far during the maiden run this morning it performed well, in that there was no interference with the water flowing across the transducer.

I've used adhesive before for other projects and yes it can work real well. I got over any regrets about drilling holes in a hull many many years ago. Sometime backing out a screw and filling a hole is easier than removing all the left over adhesive.

I have a much more reliable and low tech method of determining the depth of mud. Finding the depth is easy,,,,,,, getting your boot back is another story. :>) :>)

Think i,m going to steal your idea but make it up from some old aluminum sign i,ve got stashed away. Have my transducer mounted on starboard thats epoxied to hull. Going to try and construct it so all attachment points will continue into starboard. I can,t bring myself to drill holes in an aluminum boat below water line! Glad to here there wasn,t any interferance in waterflow around transducer.

When I first drew up the pattern for the guard, I thought about and then forgot to add a slot for the cable. I cut the slot into the upper flange after bend up. I hadn't considered that putting the slot in the middle would adversely reduce the strength in the upper flange. (the "box" became quite flexible after the slot was cut) Installing the mounting screws stiffened it back up but a better design would be to route the cable out one of the corners, leaving the flange intact.
