Took the day off from work and headed to the river. Got to my spot early and it was a good thing as later on another party showed up. Soon as they saw me they turned back and disappeared around the next bend.
About a half hour past legal shooting time a group of Mallards started to work my spread. They swung high a wide the first time but soon came in for a closer look. One last time around and they started to split up and cup their wings. Half the group was just above the decoys as the other half started to swing around. Not wanting to wait I took a bead on one just off my right. She came down dead but dropped into some really thick and tall cover. I pass on taking any more shots as I did not want to lose my mark.
Calling Ginger out from under the dodger, I stepped out onto the shoreline. Three steps into the heavy brush and I could see the dead hen another six steps further. Once again I called Gingers name and sent her towards the duck. Soon as she got a whiff of it ,she was there and picked it right up, bringing it to hand.
Took a picture a while later in the morning.
Had a few hand carved decoys set out this morning.
