Ginger's first retrieve

Took the day off from work and headed to the river. Got to my spot early and it was a good thing as later on another party showed up. Soon as they saw me they turned back and disappeared around the next bend.

About a half hour past legal shooting time a group of Mallards started to work my spread. They swung high a wide the first time but soon came in for a closer look. One last time around and they started to split up and cup their wings. Half the group was just above the decoys as the other half started to swing around. Not wanting to wait I took a bead on one just off my right. She came down dead but dropped into some really thick and tall cover. I pass on taking any more shots as I did not want to lose my mark.

Calling Ginger out from under the dodger, I stepped out onto the shoreline. Three steps into the heavy brush and I could see the dead hen another six steps further. Once again I called Gingers name and sent her towards the duck. Soon as she got a whiff of it ,she was there and picked it right up, bringing it to hand.

Took a picture a while later in the morning.

What a beautiful area you have to hunt in. You have to be so proud of Ginger and of the work you put into getting her to this level. Way to go, Dave. Love the shot of her.

Went back to the same spot this morning. Somebody must have told the ducks we were coming as they never showed up. I did see one flock of Mallards off in the distance, way off in the distance. Guess that is why it is called hunting. :>)

Coco says congratulations Ginger and for you to give that girl an extra doggie bone!

A great way to start any hunting story. Ginger sure is a good looking pup and it sounds like she's earned her way to being your new hunting partner.

well done Dave......it's super when a young dog connects the dots in a hunting situation with all of the additional distractions. Looks like you have a great partner there !
