Glassing over Gluvit

Curious if any of you boat builders out there or people with experience know if you are able to fiberglass over Gluvit that has already cured? I wasnt sure if the fiberglass resin would be to hot? I am pretty inexperienced and wanted to get some advice. thanks guys.

Is your boat wood or 'glass? (I have always used - and associated - Gluvit with wood). If you are patching or re-glassing a wooden boat that has weathered Gluvit on it, I would not hesitate to do so. But, as with any wood, I would use a marine epoxy resin and not polyester.

Hope this helps,

I have a wood transom that i would like to seal before i fiberglass over it. I was hopeing to use the gluvit to seal the wood then fiberglass over it.

Maybe i dont need to seal the wood first? I bought west systems marine epoxy to use with the fiberglass i have.

I seal with 1 coat of epoxy and then, after the seal coat has cured, 'glass over that. The 'glassing itself usually requires at least 2 and maybe 3 "coats" of epoxy resin: the initial saturation coat and then one or 2 more to fill the grain and protect the surface.

BTW: I like to apply resin with squeegees rather than brushes or rollers (I know some prefer the latter). I usually have a small throw-away brush on hand, though, for some of the details and corners, etc.

Gluvit is a thinned down epoxy. If you are going to glass with polyester, it wont work! If you are using epoxy, skip the gluvit, thin down the first coat of epoxy with denatured alcohol, use it as a penetrating sealer.Let this dry then glass with your regular epoxy laminating resin.Epoxy sticks good to polyester. Polyester wont hold well to epoxy. Rich
