Good cheaper over under?

I'm looking to get an over and under to use for duck hunting and small game hunting. What would be a less expensive but good quality gun I could pick up? I'm looking to stay under $500 if possible.

Thanks
Paul

I'm a little hesitant to get a Stoger. Two of my buddies have had nothing but trouble with the Semi auto guns they got. I know there two different types of guns, but they are always getting them fixed.

Stoeger does fit the bill. Stoger is owned by the same Benelli and Beretta. My sons 20 gauge had about 4,000 round through it before he out grew it. The only issue we had was a failure to fire the second barrel. That issue was solved with a good cleaning. The only real issue I have heard of with their o/u is one that was poorly regulated. That being the case I would pattern it first thing.

I would checkout the Weatherby Orion I. http://www.weatherby.com/products/shotguns/over-under/orionr-i.html

Unfortunately, it looks like they only have a 12 gauge model. I have one of their semiautos and I really like it but in hindsight I should have just bought a sxs or OU. I have issues with it cycling when it is real cold. I believe I paid ~$400 with an msrp of $850 so maybe the Orion isn't much above $500.

Don't forget to look used.

For a little over your $500 target, you'd be into good condition used OU's like Franchi, Daly, CZ.

I believe Eric & Thomas had good luck with his Stoeger youth model 20 O/U.

I know that T&T gunnery in Seaford sold a Russian made o/u at around 500,a friend bought one and was satisfied with it until he upgraded

Was it a Baikal? I owned one and it's was spartan and heavy but pointed well and went bang when it was supposed to. If I remember correctly Remington bought them and was selling them as Spartan 310s. Inexpensive field over and under if you can find them.

Take a look at the Mossberg Silver Reserve 2. Just slightly above your target price. its an American company which might make any warranty work if needed a little easier to remedy. Gunbroker has several on its site.

Just remember, you get what you pay for... If you buy a inexpensive o/u and it breaks, where do you get parts?
I would look for a well used o/u of better grade. Have seen a few browning, beretta, old charles daly being used for duck hunting. Finish and bluing poor, but still good shooters...

Paul,
On a whim last spring I purchased a CZ Mallard from Bud's Gun Shop online (because my local retailer couldn't find one) and couldn't be happier with it. My initial desire for it was based on the fact that it has double triggers , a plus for me, but the fit and finish is well beyond what I expected. It has the feel of a gun costing double the $500 I paid for it. Comes with 5 choke tubes and a hard case as well.

Be sure to dry fire it a few times. These bargain O/U have horrible triggers. I have polished the sears on a couple different ones for friends. Also the seem to have an issue with light primer strikes in cold weather. CZ are better than Stoeger IMO Good Luck

Yildiz if you can find one. They are only distributed through Academy Sports, a big box sporting goods chain in the southeast. I have their 20 ga side by side and have no complaints and often reach past the 12 ga for it when heading out for ducks. Briley provides stateside product support if I'm not mistaken.

I have one of the original Baikal O/U in 26" barrels. Bought it new years ago just for fun and it works great. Sloppy fit and finish but the birds fall from the sky as dead as can be. It is a lot of fun to shoot. Actually points and swings better than my Franchi O/U but not as nice as my Citori. I think I paid about $400 new but I was a much younger man then. LOL Just looked it up on the net...

One really cool feature is the ability to select either eject or extract for spent shells. Saves throwing hulls all over the place when you are in a blind or on the skeet field.

I often take it on trips as a spare gun and more often than not it gets used. Has never failed me but is definitely not a show piece. Good little field gun.
