Good deal on Makita Sander/Polisher

Tod

Sometimes they will, othe times they won't. CL warns against out-of-state deals so some people act weird when you approach them. I recommend you offer to send a certified check or perhaps tell them they can sit on it until your check clears.

I got by on the snowgoose with a Dewalt random orbital and a belt sander (and peel ply), I'll need a polisher for the tolman. Every day that project gets further and further away (as new projects come up and the economy continues to tank).

Tod, I am in Nashville and Columbia is a short drive. If you cut the deal I can pick it up and get it shipped to you. Just let me know via PM.

He hasn't responded yet. That is a great offer, thanks!

That is a great offer. Let the seller know that's a possibility so he isn't so uneasy with a out-of-state transaction. Like I said before I've had some folks get real uneasy as soon as I mentioned I was out of state.

That is a nice polisher and a great price. I had one at one time but went with a Black and Decker with variable speed control. The difference between the two is that the B&D ramped up to the final speed selected. If you pulled the trigger a little, the machine spun slowly, if you pulled the trigger all the way, you got the speed that you selected. On the Makita, there was no ramp up feature. If you pulled the trigger a little or all the way the machine was running at the selected speed. I did not like this feature as when buffing anything, ramping is almost required in my opinion. Maybe Makita has changed this on newer machines as the one I had was from a few years back.

If he is saying it doesn't go fast enough for grinding there is something wrong with the unit. Secondly, he says he attaches the buffing pads with a wing nut - that scares the snot out of me. That Makita grinder is to be used with adaptors that the buffing pad is then attached to. I have no idea what he is talking about or I'm just reading it wrong.

Mine comes up to the dialed-in speed fairly quickly but there is a ramp-up period that you can hear and feel. I seem to recall Makita did make a change in their speed control at some point. Now that I think about it that change was from 3 speeds to variable. I bet the one Tod is looking at is just like mine. I don't think he would find the start up too abrupt. Also, the top end speed of these units is slower than that of a grinder. They are for sanding and polishing. Hand held grinders run a good bit faster, like 3,000 vs 10,000. As for a wingnut I bet that leaves a pretty swirl. Actually I had to go back and read the ad but I think the wingnuts are for holding the pads in the custom box.

A typical grinder is the super common angle grinder for use dressing steel, if you tried to use a sander polisher as a grinder, you would be dissapointed. I've tried a grinder with a stickum pad and sandpaper and they cut REAL fast :). Way too fast for epoxy and wood work.

He got back to me and said that he would contact me if he didn't get any hits locally.

Now you could fire back and say a friend will come by and pick it up and that you will make payment however he wishes. Do that and it's likely yours.

OK here is the deal. I got in touch with the seller. I will go get it and ship it to you. Send me your addy and I will let you know the cost of shipping. Probably be next week to ship it.

I'll pay him and you can pay me

Wow, now that is an offer! I'll take it, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am putting you out. I'll PM you the address and other info.

Thanks a million,

Congratulations. In old woodworking machinery (owwm) speak you have just taken part in your first "Rucker". Ruckering is moving equipment across the country to help a friend out where otherwise the sale likely wouldn't have happened. Not to be confused with a "Potter" where you get a piece of equipment and store it until the buyer can come and get it.

Very nice gesture on your part Robert. Thanks for poking your head in and don't be so scarce. I wondered where you'd been and if you got out and hunted this saeson.

Eric,
I may have mentioned this but I had a little health scare a little over a year ago. I ended up with a couple of stents and a new twigs and berries diet. After hearing the terrible news about Lee I want to encourage everyone on this site to pay attention to those little aches and pains. I am thankful my wife made me go to the Doc for my "indigestion".

I hunted a bit this past season, even made a trip to Mexico. I just haven't hunted them as hard or as often as I have in the past. I have been able to spend a few days with my boys in the blind and that was a great treat.

I have a couple of shop projects on the bench including some redhead decoys in the "Pete Hilliard" genre (Black cork with herters heads).

Tod, it is a pleasure to help out a fellow Duck Boat page member. I have already picked up your polisher/sander. I will get it boxed up this weekend and on its way Monday.
I will probably build a box to protect the case, I don't think cardboard will cut it.

I'll try and not be such a stranger. Time does fly.....

"You never know when I may need a favor from a Yankee!"

That's funny stuff Robert, I'm still chuckling......

By the way, that's an awfully nice thing you did........Let this Yank know if you need help and I'd be happy to do what I can for you.

That was fast! As far as packing it up, if it would be easier for you, feel free not ship it in the carrying case. The case is nice, but the extra trouble and cost aren't worth it, especially if you would have a use for it.
