Goose call

I am in the market for a Canada goose call.

It needs to practically blow itself, and be reasonably priced.

I normally only wear calls for decoration, as I am one of the worst duck and goose callers I know. I actually am worse at it than I was when I started hunting 31 years ago.

But I have cause for one again.

Jon Yenni, keep your comments about my calling skills to yourself....

I am looking for something that makes simple clucks and honks with ease. If anyone has a recommendation, please let me know.

Thanks.

In the world of short reeds the Winglock Whisper is probably the easiest blowing shortreed made. I personally refuse to give up the flute call I have been using for 26 years. I still like the sound of a Big River Long Honker flute call. They take more air than a short reed but I have seen people learn to blow one in 20 minutes. If you can find a copy of Mick Lacy's instructional cassette you should be able to make good sounds quickly.

Bob Furia makes an excellent call that would do everything you want and is reasonably priced, as well as being easy to look at. He's posted pictures of his calls on this site if you want to see what they look like.

I have seen his calls. They are a sight to behold. I am guessing that they would be completely wasted on me!

remember the great author Gene Hill's explanation of fancy wood on his guns

"if I can't shoot good, at least I can look good shooting"

Gene hill was a genius....

I too recommend the simplicity of notes in Bob Furia's call. It has the ability to make what I consider the true guttural notes only a goose makes plus the high strong notes needed to get there attention. Easy blowing call and the quality of craftsmanship is clearly displayed in the design.

Hey Kevin,

I added one of Bob's goose calls to my lanyard for the upcoming season. It hangs next to the duck call I got from Bob a couple of years ago. Both beautifully crafted and they sound like the real thing. You can't go wrong.

The check is in the mail to Bob for one of his calls. He has some special pieces of wood available from a tree with some history and I could not pass it up. As a Certified Arborist I will cherish a piece made with wood from a special specimen.

thanks for the suggestions. I bet I end up with a duck call as well

Don't worry, I won't blow it when I am hunting with you.

Good choice Kevin. You won't be disappointed. If it's salt cedar wood, Al Hansen will be able to give you some good information. Both of my calls are from salt cedar trees Al cut in New Mexico. And who cares what others think of your calling. Blow away and enjoy!

I learned to blow short reed on a buck gardener canada hammer II. Still the easiest blowing call IMHO
