Goose limit

With the weather patterns we have been having this season, it has been a less than stellar year for me. This morning proved to be different.

I am usually froze off the river by now but the river is pretty much wide open, except in just a few back water spots, which have remained frozen. Normally I will be the only boat on the river this time of year, but arriving back at the ramp today I found six other rigs in the parking lot, all fishermen after winter Walleyes.

I put in well before dawn and motor upstream. Just before arriving at my spot, I hear the commotion. Geese are moving out ahead of me as I make my way upstream. I take this as a good sign, figuring they will filter back in over the course of the morning.

The river is low right now exposing a mud flat at a bend in the river. I could see plenty of goose sign indicating that they were using this mudflat to loaf the day away. I set up my spread. A dozen floaters out in front and a dozen full bodies on the shoreline. I position the boat and lean back to wait.

Tucked into a bay about 250 yards away, a few geese had remained and never left when I came thru to get to my spot. Those geese were now calling out to the geese filtering back in. Dang, the first few groups joined the live geese and I was beginning to have some doubts about any success for this hunt. Hard to compete with live birds.

Finally around 10:00am, a group of three geese circle my spread. They turn once more and float in over the tree tops. Wings set, honking to the decoys, on they come, ever closer to the water. Feet out and barely above the waters surface they are about set down, 20 yards out. I quickly sit forward and fire my gun three times.

All three birds lay in the water. One is trying to swim away so I reload to anchor him. Hot diggity dog, I just filled my limit. What a way to end my season, I am a happy camper.

Our season ends Jan 4th but I most likely won't get out anymore before it ends. I am just happy to have ended with a great hunt.

Great job Dave. This season has been crazy. Hoping we get some geese for our late winter season that starts mid January.

Congrats Dave. Sounds like a heck of a day.
You have to be a little tempted to go out after some of those walleyes with the way the weather has been.

Tim,

Yes indeed, only trouble would be fighting the crowd. More boats here today than a typical summer day. Course the walleyes are concentrated into a few wintering holes and all the boats are too! I have another spot in mind that is tougher to get to and should not be pressured and crowded. We will see if the weather holds.

Good job Dave, Was the pup with you?

Bill,

Yes she was, only trouble is, right now she does not think retrieving a goose is in her job description. Let me explain; earlier in the season, same spot in fact, she went to retrieve a goose only to find that the sheer size and weight overwhelmed her. Now she has no interest in geese.

I did save the wings for training and we will work on that over the next summer. She should grow a bit more before next season also.

Now that you are done with them dave send them south where they belong

Tom,

On my way home I pass by a local office building complex which has a pond in the middle of their manicured lawn area. This pond is frozen over but that doesn't stop the geese from using it. I wish I had my camera today when I went by, the entire surface of the pond was covered with geese. I'd say there were at minimum 700 geese on the ice and it's not all that big of an area. As long as we have no snow cover, they will hang around till spring.

Sorry, wish I could help. :>) :>)

Anyone who wears color coordinated camo suspenders, deserves to take a triple on those Canadas. Way to go, Dave. That is one good looking pup you have.

We have gotten more park geese than ducks this year. weird. Trip.

Trip,

My brother-in-law lives 110 miles south of me and is saying the same thing you said. He has shot more geese than previous years along with a decrease in his duck numbers.
