I know there are some Gordon MacQuarrie readers here. My wife gave me the Zack Taylor compilation trilogy in 1986. In it, Zack suggests that there are probably no more stories to be discovered; he had found them all. So imagine my surprise when I bought a compilation of hunting stories at a used book store and found an Old Duck Hunters story I had never heard of. My question for you guys is this: How many Old Duck Hunters stories did MacQuarrie write that didn't make it into Zack's books? And where might I find them?

What was the name of the Old Duck Hunters' story you found that wasn't in the trilogy? I know McQuarrie wrote many articles for the Milwaukee Journal and various sporting magazines. There may be a few ODH stories that "didn't make the grade" of those stories compiled together by Zack Taylor in his trilogy. The exact number is not a figure I have ever stumbled across.

The story is called "Pothole Guys, Friz Out". The book says it originally appeared in "Outdoorsman", which is apparently a magazine I am not familiar with. It doesn't say when it was first published.

Dave Evenson, a member here, is heavily involved with Barnes Area Historical Society and a noted MacQuarrie sherpa.

That story is included in Zack Taylor's MacQuarrie Miscellany. Willow Creek Press 1987.

Love the MacQuarrie stuff.

I'll have a look at the MacQuarrie Miscellany book. I do have another book from Willow Creek called The Gordon MacQuarrie Sporting Treasury from 1998. The dust jacket says "Includes 16 Stories Never Before Published In Book form". It also says that Zack Taylor was the force behind its publication. The book contains 38 stories, most of which I recognized from the earlier trilogy, plus some non-Old-Duck-Hunters tales, such as the Jack Pine Joe stories. Anyways, I was just wondering if there are any I haven"t seen. Thanks Again.

Re. Zack Taylor. Our son loved the Old Duck Hunters pieces as his bedtime stories growing up. He would ask for them by name. Read "Ducks You Bat You!".

So, when we discovered from a mutual aquaintance that Zack Taylor was retired to Maryland's Eastern Shore and lived only a few miles away, we arranged a visit. He was very gracious and presented our son with an autographed book and an Old Duck Hunters CD. It was a big deal for a 12 year old.

I grew up reading the trilogy, miscellany, and the sporting treasury, and a real treat was having a few stories on tape from a public radio program. We have a hunting cabin about 45 minutes from his cottage on the lake. As far as more on Mac, check out Keith Crowleys biography, and another book with different stories is "Right off the Reel." I wish there were more writers like that today.
 
Zack Taylor and Willow Creek Press put out the Trilogy, MacQuarrie Miscellany, MacQuarrie Treasury, and Fly Fishing with MacQuarrie. The other book you should read, if you like MacQuarrie is Keith Crowley's biography of Mac. Keith really did the research and you'll understand so much more after reading it.
Keith's biography lists 144 magazine articles, and he and I have found a couple more since the book. If you've read all the Zack Taylor edited books you have read 73 magazine stories. You will have most, but not all of the Old Duck Hunters stories- there are about a dozen that haven't been reprinted into book form. The rest of the magazine stories are on various other topics, not Old Duck Hunter stories, although many of them are very entertaining as well.
Mac wrote for the Milwaukee Journal from 1936-1956, about 3000 columns. I've read almost all of them, online or microfilm, and picked out many of the gems that I found entertaining and maybe you will too.The Barnes Area Historical Association (BAHA) has published two books of these Milwaukee Journal columns- the first called Right off the Reel (the name of his column) and the second called Dogs, Drink & other Drivel. Between them they have a little over 200 of Mac's best columns- some ODHA related. The books are 220 pages and 296 pages, and go for $18 and $20 plus shipping.
