Got the evil eye today

Well it is halfway thru the duck season for me and I just today grassed up my boat. The weather has been so summer like I've been spending my time fishing instead of hunting. Drove out south of town and proceeded to cut some ditch grass and stuffed it under the grassing rail.

During time I was collecting grass, the lady of the house adjacent to where I was parked, came out to get her mail. Now this is a rural county gravel road and I was couple hundred yards away from her home. She got her mail and then walked down to where I was and asked if everything thing was OK. I know the lady and she didn't recognize me until I spoke. I told her what I was doing, we chatted and made small talk, then she excused herself and went back home.

Then about a half hour later her adult daughter came home. The daughter walked down to where I was still grassing up my boat. Stood there and glared at me for a couple minutes never saying a word. I spoke up and said "It's too hot for this kind of work" (which it was). At that she turned and went back to the house as well, again never saying a word.
I don't know if she was upset I was collecting ditch grass or upset I was going to shooting ducks at some point in the future.

Dave~

Knowing how jealously we gunners guard our secret patches of thatch, it seems the most likely explanation is that Adult Daughter was peeved because you were raiding her best Ditch Grass spot....

All the best,

SJS

Everything was fine, Dave. I'm sure it was just part of the neighborhood watch program. Was the next farm 160 acres away or a section away?

Sure like that boat you are getting ready. How fast can you drive down the highway without losing any of it?

Dave,
Years ago I was doing the same thing and the people in the house across from where I was cutting the weeds called the State troopers. I was there for an extra 1/2 hour explaining to the trooper what I was doing as he gave me the ever skeptical look of disbelief. After taking my I.D. and checking it on his computer, Clean of course, I asked him if it was illegal to cut weeds from the side of the road. He never answered and just got in his car and drove off. People can be weird.

This may vary from state to state, but I think the landowner has some rights over a road right of way across his or her property, and in many cases, the "road ditch" extends out of the right of way and onto adjacent properties. If there was a nearby house, I'd stop and ask for permission.

Jeff,

Yes I'm well aware of where the legal boundary is in regards to this particular section of county road. The lady landowner and I know each other. She did not recognize my truck and strolled down the road to where I was just to inquire if I needed any assistance (as in broke down or flat tire etc). Once see recognized me, she and I chatted and made small talk for a bit.

It was only her adult daughter who seemed to have a problem with what I was doing.

I often get nasty looks when I travel to a state park and launch from the ramp within the park. No hunting in the park of course and folks are always feeding the local ducks. Even tho I travel up river quite a ways beyond the park and any houses, the folks feeding the ducks don't like it that I will be shooting some of those same ducks.

Nice! I bet you get some strange looks hauling that down the road. That should blend in really nice.

Steve,
Around here, folks just think I'm a farmer hauling hay to his cattle.

Looks good Dave. Hopefully fall will get here before the season ends!...Lol. I haven't fired my gun since opening morning. No migration here on the ole Miss. River is still running strong and high. Many who had blinds in the islands in my area haven't even tried to build their blinds back this year.
