Grand Canyon Dory

On a recent visit to Bend, Oregon we had a chance to see a dory that was built by our son's friend. He modeled it after the original design used on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The next day he was leaving for a 19 day float in the canyon. Quite a maiden voyage. I thought you'd enjoy a couple of pictures.

Great looking boat. Very much like the Mackenzie River style boats, and modern drift boats, but with that deck it would be damn hard to stand and cast.

I supposed you'd want the deck in the kind of water they'll find in the Grand Canyon, though.

Is it self bailing?

If that boat is only going to be used on the Deschutes then casting from it will not be an issue. You are not allowed to fish from a boat. One of the reasons I believe it has remained such a good fishery. I wonder why they choose to build that over a Mckenzie style driftboat? It looses a lot of utility as a fishing and hunting boat with that deck for the other rivers in the northwest. If it going to be used for bagging for guide trips Maybe the thought was they can carry more gear with out the fear of swamping the boat in the larger rapids for the extended trips. 19 days is a long time on the river!!!

He built it just for this trip. He guides now on the Deschutes and plans on building another for guiding next season.

19 days is pretty typical for a run down the entire stretch of the canyon.
