Hey guys need a lil input i am gonna grass my boat with avery real grass mats this year and i saw a couple of guys who said to spray them with waterseal and i was wondering if i should use the clear or a certain tint i didnt want it to be to dark. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,B.Miller

I wouldn't spray them. The spray can sometimes leave a shiny coating on them. If you are buying new grass buy it now get some marsh mud and mud them up. Then leave them outside until the season starts. I usually lay them over saw horses behind my shed. The new grass is way too light in my opinion for the marshes of south jersey. It will still last you years and years. Some of the best grass I have is 10 yrs old and blends in perfectly.

Brian, I agree with Brians post, let them weather a bit and they will turn a darker color. I attached mine with black wire ties. After the season I take them off and store them inside. If you leave them on the boat outside all year you will only get 1-2 years out of the mats. If you keep your boat inside you can leave them on. Also you can use parkers camo spray paint on them to blend them in, just spray them lightly. Good luck.

I'm confused . . . which shouldn't be too surprising . . .

It seems to me that the grass mats get brittle and breakdown with use / exposure. How do you leave them out to weather w/o them breaking down?

I've just been using a couple different colors of flat camo spray paint and lightly misting some "zebra stripes" on mine. Really makes them blend in nicely.

I store mine inside... I usually get about 7 seasons out of them... which is about 9000 miles of road miles....

I spray paint my mats on the the boat... flat brown.. after going down the road.. the blades get adjusted and blend in to most environments.. as previously stated.. I think most mats are to light for most environments.

I do store them inside with the boat AFTER they are weathered and mudded up so it sounds like we all basically do the same thing. You are right though if stored outside all year maybe 1-2 seasons. If I were to buy new grass today it would be outside until the season started.

Painting the underside and letting the road wind do the work is a real good idea

Imho the avery grass is one of the ugliest grasses on the market it is also cheap made and won't take as much abuse as others. I like the original fastgrass over any of the cheaper mats on the market. You pay the $$$$ for them but they will last longer and blend in better with a large variety of areas. We season our mats for a couple months prior to putting them on boats outside. Have gone as far to pile mud and wet grass on them to get a little mildew action started to get the color where I wanted it. Once attached those mats lasted 4 years and only rotted when I stored my boat outside without a cover over a spring and summer. you can attach them to a boat that is trailered and get them soaking wet, after that drive up and down some gravel roads to get them dust covered. Do that weekly for about a month and they get that nice grey/yellow/brown dead marsh grass look to them.
