grease fitting types...

On my outboard (yamaha) I have two grease fittings that I need to grease, but I haven't seen them before. Basically they are a screw (about 1/4") with a hole (about 1/16") running through (no spring and stopper like on a zerk, from what I can see). They are to grease the shaft/bearing that the motor pivits up and down on. To grease this I woudl need quite some pressure to drive the grease in.

Is there an attachment that I that fits this fitting that I can get commonly?

Tod,

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Do you want to replace these fittings with more of the same? Do you need a gun fitting to mate up to your present fittings? Do you want to replace these fittings with a different style?

If you wish to replace the fittings one would need to remove the present fitting and check the thread size. It MAY be a metric thread (measure carefully and precisely) but could also be a pipe thread. Grease fitting use several different threads and that would be what you would need to "match" when replacing a fitting.

Dsve,

That does raise the question, should/could I replace it with a zerk? I'm sure it is a metric thread and the boat does serve to hold a plate, but it isn't a heavy duty job. The issue is this is a 40 hp and built to be set up remote and usually there is a zerk in that hole, but with a tiller they use this bolt with a hole in it. I'm just wondering how to get grease in that hole easily.

Tod,

I have a number of geese points on my outboards that don't have the zerk style sealing fittings. The end of my grease gun nozzle fits over them and I simply pump white grease into the hole. The pressure of holding the nozzle tight against the part is enough to get it well into the part. I also have a couple of greasing needles that can be inserted into holes to add grease from the bottom of the grease port pushing the old grease back out past the needle. Lots of fittings and adapters out there, you probably don't need to replace the existing fittings.

It seems really rinky-dink and I can't imagine getting any grease in there with a pressure fit kinda thing - a zerk woudl be great.

Tod,

Scott is correct in how the fitting works. I'm not familiar with any special coupler for the gun to be used on these fittings.

I'm not sure if you could replace your present setup if the "fitting" also serves as a "bolt" to hold something. Are you sure the fitting isn't screwed into the end of the bolt?

If you are able to remove just the fitting, you should then be able to replace it with a "zerk" type fitting. As said before, carefully match the threads if you replace it. My best guess is the threads will be either (metric) M6 X 1 pitch or (english) 1/4 x 28 pitch.
