My oldest son Will loves hunting, it is one of his favorite things to do in the world. He has challenges and sadly will never be able to carry a gun and he doesn't have much stamina so he gets worn out easily...
Suffice it to say, i can't take him duck hunting in the cold weather as it's too dangerous. Thinking for the boat, myself, the dog, etc... and thinking for him and his comfort is way too much in the event of a problem out there in the bay (inland is frozen solid). So his dream of hunting on his 18th birthday (today) was dashed because it's way too cold...
So, Morton invited us both to his club yesterday to go pheasant hunting. It was a cold but great day. The Water Spaniel worked his little head off but no birds were found... there were lots of hunters and many early shots... the action was occurring around the truck tracks in the snow... Will focused on the core of hunting - the friends, the other tracks in the snow and the exercise and excitement of putting up a bird.
We had a great time. David's club is beautiful and Will, Pip (the AWS) and I were worn out. Will told me last night that he loved going hunting on his birthday. So... thanks Mr. Sport, you're a great hunting partner.
