Greetings! I've been enjoying reading the posts and was encouraged to introduce myself as a new forum member. I look forward to reading more and getting to know y'all.

My hunting career really didn't take off until my son was about 8 years old and told me that he'd like to go hunting. Most of the outdoor pursuits that I participate in these days are because of that young man's desire to explore the world via hunting and fishing. I went on a few outings growing up that included pheasant hunting in Washington state and a couple of deer hunts but my father was very busy as an Army Ranger and we just didn't get out that much.

Years later as a dad myself, when my son expressed a desire to hunt, I poured over books and Youtube videos and NC Wildlife classes and then we'd take to the field. Had I not gone through the steep learning curve of learning on my own later in life I don't think I'd have appreciated authors like Bill Heavey, and his classics: "You aren't lost if you can still see the truck" or "If you didn't bring jerky, what did I just eat?" Fast forward 8 years and we've taken many squirrels, deer, ducks, and turkey almost exclusively on public land. Shhh, don't tell anyone as most of the people I meet think the public lands are a zoo. Other than duck hunting that just hasn't been true for us.

Our duck hunting started 3 seasons ago. During the October opener we hunted two spots after having scouted them and somehow managed to bag several wood ducks and two geese. I shot my first wood duck drake and it literally landed at my feet! I quickly picked it up and threw it into the creek for my dog to retrieve - good girl!

The opening day of that first November split was not nearly as kind. I had hip waders on and there were guys already in the hole we had scouted the few days prior to the opener. We moved on past them as far as we could and saw plenty of birds. By the time we saw them they were LONG gone, just a fleeting moment of realizing I had seen a duck and should have been ready. I also thought, how are you supposed to shoot something moving that fast! We both fell in, got soaked and it was a ~ 20 degree morning. We left the swamp freezing, shivering, and without a single duck. As we walked out my son and I commiserated about how insane that experience was compared to the October opener. I fell in again both forward and backward in hip waders that filled up and said a few choice profanities, apologized to my son and then I said: "As crazy as that was, I can't wait to get back out again." My son agreed and we've been hooked ever since.

We've learned a lot since then and have made, I'm sure, every mistake in the book. All that said, my son got three banded wood ducks this past October opener. Three different waves of birds and three bands! He's stoked as you can imagine.

Kindest regards from Apex, NC!

Good morning, Chris - and welcome!

Great tale well-told! I give you lots of credit for succeeding so well with so "late" a start in this grand passion of ours.

And - take heart. I was fortunate enough to have a Dad who got me hooked before kindergarten. With 54 seasons under my belt since I can still be counted upon to make rookie mistakes. And we all keep going back!

All the best,

SJS

Welcome aboard and welcome to the addiction we call duck hunting!

Chris

Welcome to the site and I fully appreciate your intro. You see I started duck hunting when I was 16 and learned it on my own. When my son was four I took him on his first hunt and he has been my regular hunting partner since, over 16 years. We have spent countless hours together over those years and will spend many more. There is no replacement for time when it comes to building meaningful father-son relationships and I value every minute we spent and it has been worth every dollar I forked over too. We talk just about every day even when he is away at college. The hours and hours we spent together gave us time to talk at length about the challenges he faced growing up and helped prepare him for the day he would go off to school and beyond. He is doing great and without a doubt the love he has for hunting was a positive influence and time well spent.

You are on the right track, a track that too many parents miss. Congratulations.

Eric

Outstanding!!!

My boys are 24 and 27 and I was able to make to week long trips with each of them recently. There is no better experience than spending time in the outdoors with your children!

Welcome Chris!

Great intro. Is that your daughter in the first shot? Does she have interest in hunting as well?

Hope your son knows how lucky he is with the bands. I've been hunting for ...wow....18 years now and have only gotten 3 bands. They were all in the same season interestingly. Some fellas here have hunted longer than me and only gotten one, or none.

Welcome to the community and to the addiction and craziness of duck hunting.

Dani

Welcome from pasquotank, NC.

There is quite a few good spots to hunt near your neck of the woods and glad y'all made it through the rough learning curve and are sticking with it. I need to come down to Apex soon and drop a deer at a taxidermist, if I have time (who has extra of that) maybe we can meet up and talk a little.

That is great to hear. My son and I have so many fond memories of our time in the woods together. I'm hopeful that as he goes off to school and work that we'll have occasions to get out and hunt and fish together for many years to come.

Yes, that young lady is one of my daughters and she is definitely interested in hunting. I know about the bands. We calculated it and the probability of that happening is 0.006%, literally 6 1thousandths of a percent - insane!

Chris, by now, I trust you have made the switch to neoprene chest waders--much drier, not to mention warmer.[;)]
Isn't it amazing how something with a brain the size of a small lima will often leave you scratching your head in awe. I am still impressed by God's handiwork, especially with sunrises, the sounds of a marsh waking up, and the first flights of the day, especially when teal are involved.
Oh yeah, it is also a thrill finding those little trinkets on birdlegs!

Chris -

Welcome aboard.

Youngsters are the life blood, and future of waterfowling.

They are also a well spring of inspiration and adventure.

Thank you for doing your part, and I tip my hat to you and yours.

Lots of good folks here to help ya out, and give ya plenty of tips and info.

Have fun and be safe.

Best regards
Vince

Welcome to the fray, Its great to see that your bringing up your Son in the outdoors and especially waterfowling. When my Son graduated and enlisted in the army I really missed being able to spend some days hunting together. We'll after 3 years in the service he was accepted to West Point and is only an hour away. Besides our obvious pride we have been able to enjoy his company again and he and I have been enjoying some hunting and fishing again. Cherish those days together and you will have a lifetime friendship of a shared passion.

Chris, welcome to the site. You're doing well to have such success on waterfowl in the Triangle area. We lived in Cary (Apex High School) for 20 years. I rarely waterfowl hunted during those years but saw quite a few wood ducks while deer hunting public land. My most memorable hunts with 3 sons were for doves, mostly around Mount Olive. Glad to see you are making great outdoor memories with your kids there. WOW on those bands!

Thank you again for the welcome everyone. We haven't been on any really big outtings but we have hunted and fished all across the state and have the most fond memories together. I hope, just as several of you have expressed that it will continue well into old age and hopefully with grandchildren too.

Congratulations on your son getting into West Point Peter, that is awesome! My son and soon to be adopted son both desire to do that.

If it isn't too late, I'd love to meet up when you are out this way Benjamin.

Best to you all.
