Griffon's first season….

I have been lurking awhile so I figure I better get active again. This is my Griffon's first season and she did real well. She was well mannered in the blind with no whining or barking. She just needs more and more birds shot over her and she will become a good bird dog. She is starting to figure this duck blind thing out. She was pretty surprised at her first snow goose and how that changed up the retrieve considerably. ha

Good looking versatile dog. It sounds like your griff likes to sit still better then my wirehair does.
I know how those geese can change a dogs attitude. When my pup saw a goose fall after having to watch them fly over all summer he was pumped to say the least. :) It is so much fun to see the dots get connected in a young dogs mind.

I hope we continue to see photos of your dog.

Sean, thanks for that photo and story of your pup. Glad to know that she had a very good year. You are right about reps---nothing like them as a teaching tool. I will look forward to more pictures and stories this coming year. Good luck.
What did she do differently after you shot the snow goose?

Al, it didn't really change her game up as much as it made her jump around trying to figure out how to bring it in. It was pretty funny as she noticed the size difference and was trying to figure out how to swim back with it. She didn't seem to want to mouth the body so she was looking at the head, fee, wings, etc trying to figure out the best angle of approach. I need to do some more force fetching with her to get her used to small and large birds.

I haven't had her on a true upland hunt yet. So far just planted birds for training and she did really well on her NAVHDA NA test and picked up a perfect score her first time out at 6 months. She is super, super birdy.

I have three young kids so my opportunities to get out in the field definitely aren't what they were pre kids and pre kid sports. The only thing holding her back is me at this point.

Thats great! I love taking my dog out for ducks. His first time on ducks made me really proud with 6 ducks retrieved, and one goose inspected and sort of like "You want ME to pick that up?" haha

Beautiful dog you have there Jon.

My prior dog was a Chessie and he was a blast to hunt with too. The looks I get though when my Griff comes out of the kennel are always interesting.
