Growth on gooseberries??

Do quite a bit of gardening myself... I'd hit it with a diluted milk spray. Or a really lightly concentrated hydrogen peroxide mix.
I'd try the diluted milk first... Say 10:1 water/milk.

Any pest present?

And I'd probably hit it with some Neems Oil and sprinkle some DE, just for grins.
Hard to overdo the organic controls. I always exhaust them before I move to something more intense!

No bugs have been seen, the Asian beetles were out heavy earlier summer, but haven't even seem much of the lately.
And what is DE?

Diametacious earth. Works well for anything that has an exo-Skelton. Only downside is that it can't get wet. Once it's wet it's ineffective. The De/Neems would effective against a caterpillar that is secreting a substance that looks like mold/fungi! The milk/hydrogen peroxide would be effective if it's fungal or viral!.With a combo of all those I've mentioned, if it doesn't stop within a week. I'd be making a call to the local county extension office to have it tested!

I think Dave nailed it. If you pick off a couple infected leaves and put them in a ziplock bag overnight, you'll probably grow something that looks like this:

Better infromation on the problem, and various control methods can be read there:

PM me if you need my address...Dave's allergic to jelly, jam and pies I hear...

Andrew,

I think it may be this: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cor/ribes/ribsymp/leaf3a.html Although, your pictures look different from the pictures in the link. Here is a link on some general information of control of leaf spot in plants: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/management-of-leaf-spot-diseases/ There is probably not a lot you can do.

That big crop is putting a stress on the plants so it isn't surprising that htis has showed up. The ribes family are pretty hardy plants in general.

Chuck, Don't be spreading rumors you can not verify. I did in fact, just now pop the lid on a fresh jar of home preserved blueberry jam. It should go well with some warm toast and hash browns.

You just can't have a thread, without Dave and Chuck going at it, LOL.
Thanks for the help guys, I sprayed with the milk early this morning, couldn't find Neems oil at Fleet Farm will be going to Steins later today.
On a more duck hunting note, I found a "secret" lake today while coming back from horseback riding lessons for my daughter. Small private lake, stopped and chatted with a guy, and got access this fall. Now just have to wait and see if ducks use it. Oh, I have to do some electric work in trade, but not a bad deal.
Thanks again guys.
