Gummed Outboard

Larry I had the same problem with my 25 Johnson , took it to a local mech and he had it running like new in no time, I used it all summer fishing and had been putting marine stabil in it everytime I got gas with no problem, I let the boat sit for a month and took it the other day and it wouldn't crank kinda ticked me off so I loaded it back up went home and pored the gas out bout 3 gal and put new in it and it cranked right up. SO I have no idea what caused it not to crank unless the gas had water in it . The motor ran kinda rough for a min or so and then idled fine after that. It had stabil in it and I put more in with the new gas. I plan on taken it to the river monday when I'm off so maybe it will run.

I have struggled with carb problems for years on two and four stroke motors. Especially those that sit for months between seasons. I always drained the carbs by running dry(with Stabil treated gas) at the end of the season, but still had problems with gummed jets months later. My Honda mechanic told me that even runnig the carbs dry leaves some gas behind. The carbs have a drain screw at the bottom or on the bowl, and you will be surprised how much fuel you get out (especially on the bottom carb of a multiple carb motor)by draining them after running them dry. Since adding this step to my winterization procedure, I have not had any gumming problems.

I switched to Seafoam 2 years ago,it cured my starting problems. I don't drain the carbs, just dump out the old gas replace with new before starting. I use Seafoam in my outboards, chainsaws, weed eater, tiller and wood splitter . Recycle the old gas thru my car, works for me.

Chris, not to be criticizing but there is a difference between a no crank and a no start.Old or bad gas should give you crank/no start condition.A faulty battery or electrical concern would give you a no crank condition. That one of my pet peeves I always throw at the service writers. :)

Robert, I don't know which is was for sure all I know no matter how many times I pulled the rope the motor never started or ran so I took it home poured out the gas and put new in it and third pull it started up and ran fine for 30 min in a drum and I shut it off and have been running it for a few min everyday in that drum . So maybe next week when I'm off I can take it to the river and ride and scout some of my duck holes and see how they look this year.
