Gun Question....17 hmr

I just purchased a bore Snake for cleaning my 17 and I'm having trouble getting it through the barrel. The bore snake was recommended for cleaning but having never used one before I'm not sure what to expect. I got it started but it was so tight that I backed off for fear of getting it jammed in the barrel. There wasn't a lot of instructions on the package so I wasn't sure if you just use it dry or add lubricate to it or not. Anyone have experience and advise.

Willy, I usually add some "Bore Scrubber" spray to the snake. It is designed to be used with a solvent of some kind. They can be VERY tight in the bore. One end should have a narrow metal tipped string that can just drop threw the barrel. I drop that threw and step on the metal tipped end and pull the barrel until it passes completely threw. I hope this makes sense. They work great, I use them on all of my guns

Willy: I use one on my German 16 Ga. and I always drop the cord through from the breech end. That way you get it started into the chambers, forcing cones and then it slides through pretty easy right up to the chokes. Old German guns are choked full and fuller so that's the only place I have problems.

Hope that helps.

Any word on the Work Station?

I did not like the looks of the .17 snakes and bought the one piece rod instead. I only clean it when it starts to shoot wide and it takes about 40 rounds down a clean bore to get it back shooting tight. Use your snake for your .22 and get some .17 patches with a fiber rod

I always use a cleaner on my bore snake. Pulling the snake through the barrel is scary though. I wouldnt use one with a weak string. I always worry about it breaking when I clean my .17. I use bore snakes for most of my guns. Easy and quick. John

Get a good stainless rod like a Dewey and a rod guide.

The snake is nice for the occasional cleaning in the field and the rod is for the serious stuff...

I don't use bore snakes at all,but I have a friend that uses them on his 17,20,and 22 cal rifles.First, make sure it is a 17cal bore snake. Then drop the weighted ind in the breech, add solvent to the forward mop end and pull it through with a steady pull, making sure the snake doesn't hang up at the action end.Don't know how long they last before the string breaks,so inspect frequently. You won't soon forget removing a bore snake that had the string break.I use one piece rods with bore guides on all my rifles. The Tico or other rods and bore snakes are fine on shotguns.

I use them all the time for my guns. They are tight, I believe they are supposed to be. That is whats cuts the gunk. Never had one with a weak string and I have some that are really tight, like my .410. Gotta pull pretty hard on it but it always comes through.
