This post seems to have gotten resurected since I first posted it back in Aug. Sorry I didn answer these questions more promptly. I haven't been checking in as regularily as I used to.
Kris, it is ususally very difficult to get a fuzzy rack all the way home with the velvet in tact. It rubs off on everything, strips, and starts to rot fairly soon, so unless you can preserve it in the feild it makes more sense to strip it all off while it is fresh and peels easily. Once it dries a bit some patches really stick on while others rot. I have kept a few racks in velvet over the years that are on plaques inside, and the rest go on a horn pole (big pine tree) at Jane's cabin. I use Varsol to preserve the velvet by painting it on the beams twice a day for a couple of weeks, and injecting it right into the tips if they are soft as well as flushing the bigger veins with it. Takes a while to do a big rack and stinks for months.
Bill, spooky is definately the right word for bears that won't be scared off easily. I've only shot one grizzly in my life and when he saw me he walked straight at me. When he stood up I got one shot, right in the heart at about 60 yds or so. I was steady as a rock until about a minute after it was all over and then I got the shakes.
Capt Mitch, no shooting the bears in that zone which is probably why they were so plentiful and assertive.
William, no way would I feel comfortable in that long grass like you were talking about. I l ike to see my bears a half mile away on the open tundra thank you. A friend of mine was just hunting on Kodiak in Nov and said it was wild. He took a real nice 9'er with about a 25" skull. I was surprized at how stocky those bears are compared to our inland version here. A lot like American bred labs vs English bred. The coastal bear had way shorter legs and way bigger feet too.And it totally smelled like a salmon stream at low tide. Yum.
Don, easy to see why arranged marriages were a good idea for so many years for so many cultures eh? And I agree, this is a nice place to hang around.
Hey Fred, glad to hear you are having some luck and getting out. I got one can myself this year wich is pretty rare in these parts.
Thanks for all the compliments guys. I do read them all even though I don't always reply. My computer time is really limited due to not being able to sit, and even though I bought a lap top I can't type worth a crap on it when I'm laying down.
Its great to see everyone else's pictures too, keep 'em coming!
