Just curious if folks know of a good hand planer I can pick up to smooth out a board prior to cutting out a pattern with the bandsaw? Do I want a jointer planer? Look like they can get pretty expensive...

You can do a decent job with the classic Stanley #5 jack plane for a regular, decoy sized block. Pretty ubiquoutous and not nearly as pricy as #7 jointer.
I used to have a #7, but I ended up selling it because I didn't find it useful for the blocks I was working with.
A block plane is also pretty handy. I've got, I think, a 9 1/2 and it's nice for doing some quick clean-up.
