Happy Fronder's Day

Blackduck #4 for the fall frond rig:

Was able to get this one done without cutting myself with Wooster's knife once again! One more black to do, and then on to the mallard pair. This frond started as a "drinker," but when it came time to shape the breast area, I decided lifting the head looked better. Part of the challenge with these is making it up as you go.

Happy Father's Day to all.

How much Val-oil will that sucker soak up?

Dave,

I have two coats on in the picture.

I'll then sand all the areas that have tiny hairlike fibers that wouldn't sand off 'til hardened with the VO ( just the nature of the frond and the way its fibers run) and give her one more coat. The Val-Oil does a nice job of hardening up the areas that might be a bit soft before sealing as well - the fronds tend to have different surface area density in different spots. When ready for use, the bird will have an additional gesso base coat followed by a hard shell texture coat below the paint job.

Bob I know some black ducks up here that would love to settle in to a few of those frond beauties at about 6:40 on a nice cloudy fall morning in the salt marsh. What a nice shape. I think my father in laws palm trees are in trouble next time I get to visit him in Fla.

this frond thing is really starting to catch my attention. can anyone hook me up with a list of important tools a source of frond and places to purchase such materials, i think one of these would be a shocker for our local du chapter banquet. our cedars up here in vermont must have a serious frond deficiency cause ive never seen these birds carved up this way.

again wicked birds bob
