Thanks Phil. That was Moose, my first brown dog. He gave us 13 years of incredible retrieves, devotion and was unsurpassed when it came to caring for my wife and our children.
That particular hunt we were situated on top of a drumlin in central MA. It was really cold and foggy morning and it's the only time I've ever had mallards and Canadas, in a mixed flock, dropping into a corn field. They came in fast and furious and we had our limit in less than 30 minutes. We had just met the two gentlemen on the right while setting out decoys. The smaller of the two, Dick, tried to send Moose on a bird he had shot and was perplexed when he was totally ignored. He was even more confused, when after we had our limit, Moose then proceeded to bring all 16 birds to my hand, without any acknowledgement to any of the others. It is a memory I'll never forget.
