Not sure if this is a lower grade of what you have. The wood is low end, and the checkering is almost like it is burned/pressed in or something. The only neat thing about it (other than it came from grandpa) is the goose scratched into the side.

Eddie,

I usually do a little rifle hunting for deer, and a lot of duck hunting, but this year (and next) I won't get out as much. Life is pretty busy with full time work/full time school. If all goes well, I'll graduate in 2009 and I will get back to hunting as much as I like.

Are you off on Monday? I get the day off this year. Maybe we could get out then? I also have a break from school at Thanksgiving and could get out weekend before (18th) or the weekend after (24th or 25th).

I'm also definitely going out a couple of times when Mike's can arrives (I'm supposed to have it Nov 29th- Dec 4th), so let's try then.

Two incredible dekes and a couple of old doubles (have to pick up some 2 3/4 bismuth tho'), sounds like fun. I've got a safe boat with lots of space and would gladly drag it up there if you know where to go.

Maybe if I can find some time between now and then I'll cobble together a GE deke too. It'll suck compared to any of your masterpieces, but what the hey, the ducks don't care as much as we do!

Give me a call, or shoot me an email or PM if you don't have my number and I'll get it to you.

Charlie, mine is just like that..only in a lot better shape. I think I posted pics or sent them out when I had it for sale. The checkering isn't very deep on mine either.

Is that a Lefever Nitro Special? Those are nice guns. Can you shoot bismuth or hevi shot through those? My dad was recently given an Ithaca double with 28" full choked barrels. It was his dad's gun and is probably 50+ years old. They don't guns like that any more.

Nate, I have shot a total of two shots through mine. It was Bismuth #4's and it looked like slugs hitting the water..super tight chokes I guess. If I was going to use it for ducks, I'd try to find bismuth #4's or #5's and load up shells with cork wads and no plastic wad and let the old chokes work like they are sposed to.

Nate,

Yup, you got it. Mine's a pretty sorry example, but that is what it is - Lefever Nitro Special.

Grandpa shot lots of ducks, bunnies, pa'tridge and everything else with it in the day. The action is tight but the wood is beat and the finish is worn. It was used to kill stuff though, so it is to be expected.

I used it for grouse some as a teen, it was the only gun I had of my own. It worked fine with low brass lead 2 3/4 shells. I have absolutely no idea if it was safe or not, but it went bang when I pulled the trigger and it killed birds. Never tried it for ducks, but might if Eddie and I get out over the King and Ed's GE.

I read up on the Nitro Special a bit and this gun was really more of an Ithaca than a Lefever. Lefever owned the company but I think they bought Ithaca arms and they got this cheapo gun, rebranded it Lefever to try to sell them.

Supposedly the early (real) Lefevers were really nice guns and current values are much higher. Probably what your dad has.

It is neat to have old guns like this. I could see myself getting into old guns as I get older, once I can afford them. They have personality that the new guns don't (even if they are not mass produced workhorses that the modern guns are).
