Has anyone used a frieght service for shipping boats?

I am considering selling my BBSB and trailer and have a buyer, but he is 800 miles away in Cape Cod. Other than meeting halfway, is there any other way to get the boat there?

This is VERY unfamiliar territory to me...
Thanks for the help.

I like the half way idea. I would be worried if I found a carrier that the boat would make it like you left it. New boats are put on carriers all the time but different construction and not packed in with other stuff. The meet in the middle will give you an excuse to see some place new. I have made trips that long and longer to sell items and it was well worth it as no stress. Last thing I would want is a damaged boat 800 miles away and getting the carrier to pay up is easier said than done.

You could have posted this 2 weeks ago, I could have done it :(.

Hank, If you use a freight carrier make sure you have the weight right or you will get a real surprise latter on. Good luck.

Tom.

And the freight class, A lot of brokers will try to cheat the class of the product to make more money. We Used freightquote.com like Lou for a couple years then we got hammered with a loss due to freight class, From now on we double check any shipments and make sure the proper freight class is used which by the way for a fiberglass boat is 400.
Uship is a great way to get something moved if time is not a rush. Always shippers rolling around looking to fill space on there trucks.

Several years ago, I got a Burdick scull float out of New Orleans area. Used UShip. The shipper actually put of his cash to buy the boat and I paid him for the boat and delivery when he delivered. I was having communications issues with the seller and was afraid to pay up front and then not have a smooth handoff to the shipper. It was a neat process.

It you ship I will second soe kind of crating for protection of the boat. I bought one of the first Four River layout boats. It was shipped as is. There was some minor damage, they sent me a repair kit and all was good. I'm not sure everyone would be as understanding I was then.

What ever you do, do not use American Access or Towne Air freight. And also clearly ask how much insurance protection you get with the shipment.

Check out "freightpros.com", they are a freight broker and will get you quotes from shipping companies. I just went through them to have my duplicator shipped from Florida to Illinois. The price was cheaper than I could have drove down/back....

I'm of the opinion that it's incumbent on the buyer to either pick up the item or arrange/pay for shipping. I understand that you may have agreed on different terms. I drove about 1,000 miles round trip to pick up a boat that I bought off ebay. Did it in one day.

Hank, if you use U-Ship make sure the hauler has DOT authority and insurance. I used to get a few loads from them but the "no paper work" people will try to undercut the legal haulers. Plus U-Ship rapes the hauler on with fees.
