Was in Walmart today over lunch. Wandered into the sporting good section just to look around.
Walked up to the shotgun case and saw a semi-auto with a $229 price tag. Did a double take. Yep, $229.

Hatfield brand, 12 gauge, semi-auto. $229.

I've looked around the internet a little. Apparently made by Huglu Firearms in Turkey. Reviews are mixed.
I tend to scratch my head and thing can you really make a good semi, ship it to the US and then sell it for just $229???
Anyone have any firsthand experience with these guns??

I have seen Tristar semi autos at my Walmart at about that same price point. I have yet to bring one home and put it through its paces. It'd make a great back up:loaner if it were reliable.

I think I would laugh and keep on walking. At this point in time, making a semi-auto shotgun is not rocket science. That being said, no matter what corners they cut, to be able to sell in the States for under $250... there is not much fat on the bone for anyone. With the price we pay for license, stamps, ammo, boats, decoys and travel. Why take the chance?

Carl,

Did you look in the other shotgun case next to the Hatfield case? The McCoy's had their semi autos for $189.00. It looks like the feud is still going on.

I would be very skeptical of a semi auto in that price range, if only from a safety standpoint.

I have a Huglu o/u 12 ga that I bought slightly used around 10 years ago. It has hunted every season, upland, waterfowl, bunnies... It's been to the bottom of a lake champlain marsh, been coated in dust hunting stubble. Granted it's an o/u and not a semi, but It has never failed me and the craftsmanship seems to be respectable. The engraving job looks like it was designed at a pre-school art table, but otherwise, I can't say a bad thing about the gun.
Several years ago, I bought new Remington pump shotguns for more money than the Walmart semi and have been less than impressed. Price point and brand name don't always equate to a more reliable product.
