Heinrichs jr sneak box

Joe~

Is the framing member at the bow the harpin (also spelled harping, as below) ?

Vessels like Sneakboxes and Scooters - with their spoon-shaped bows - use a special horizontal framing member(s) to tie together the top, bottom and sides of the hull.

Howard Chappelle spelled it "harpin" and Peter Guthorn spelled it "harping" - but note that Chappelle shows a "stem block" in his plans - much like a Great South Bay Scooter. John Gardiner shows a "sheer harping" in his plans:

I wish we had a supplier of Atlantic White Cedar up here (northeast of Albany, NY). I brought enough back from Tuckerton in 2019, though, to see me through my own Sneakbox restoration next Spring.

Hope this helps?

Yes Steve. Looks to be the harpin. Thank you! The first 3 ribs worth are rotted on both sides of my box. Was wondering if i can cut and splice or just have to replace the whole length? And also the harpin (bow block) is rotted but thats not a big deal

More progress today! The harping i made fit like a dream. Fit it to the boat and gave it a quick coat of paint, hopefully next weekend it will be installed. Took the other harping out and will make that tonight. Also removed both oar locks and other wood off deck to make new ( not sure what they are called, best I can see is they are just used to lock decoy racks on.

Even cut one new plank to test fit everything. Alot of work went into this and I?m not nearly done.
