Help/Advice - E Allen Decoys and cork dust

I've got nearly 2 dozen E Allen mallard decoys that are about 10 years old. They've held up great, including the paint.
I've always felt they were too shiny on sunny days. I'm thinking of coating them with cork dust/Titebond 3.
Has anyone done this to their E Allens? I"m looking for help with how to prep the decoys so the dust/Titebond 3 will bond.

Thanks,
Denny

If you want to dull them down, you could go over the paint with a scotch brite and/or spray on a couple mist coats of Testors Dull Cote and that'll cover it.

I used Titebond II because TB III was not developed yet. I used Goldens over it and it has held up great. I have used the TB III on my corks this year but have yet to hunt them. From just handling the TB III ones I think I like the TB II better. Seems to make a harder shell. We will see after this year but I think I will still switch back to TB II since it has proven it's self and I have it in my head that it is a better product.

Thanks guys.

Lou - After 10 years I'm ready for a change. I'm going to leave my diver E Allens like they are but I'm going to change the mallards. I'm hoping I don't have to strip them.

Lee - thanks for the heads up. I've used Titebond II on lots of burlapped decoys I coated with cork dust. it worked perfectly. I should probably keeping using Titebond II , too.

try using a GOOD matte acrylic!! Schpritzing is soooo temporary!

Hey George - greetings.
I've had really good luck with Titebond II/cork dust painted with Golden paint. My diver rig has lots of them and they are really durable. It makes it really easy to touch up/change colors too. Poor man's cork decoys?

Make sure you are using matte!!!
I guess any texture will hold paint a lot better than a smooth surface--What we used to call, on canvas, Tooth!
Hey, are you a former resident of minnesota?

I use the Golden Mattes with the grey lids. Buy the base coats in gallons. Saves money. Buy mine from Italian Art Store. Price increase on Golden due after the first of the year. Not sure how much of an increase. I like the Golden Mattes because they are not chalky. I tried Jansen's but marred really bad. Will not buy it any more. I really like the way the Jansen's looked and painted on. Will stick with what works from now on and not follow what anyone else recommends.
