help hunting in northern NY

I will be making a couple trips to northern New York (Watertown, Carthage area) this fall/winter and will be looking to do some duck/goose and possible pheasant hunting. From doing research online I have found a fair number of WMA's in this area and have a few questions.Do some WMA's require a separate permit to hunt, if so what does that entail? Are boats with motors allowed in these areas? How crowded do these areas get? Are there any specific areas within 2 hours of Watertown that I should look into? Any help would be much appreciated and if anybody is willing to let me and my well behaved steady dog tag along somewhere that would be cool too. Of course I would be willing to help in any way I could for anybody coming south to the eastern shore of Maryland.
Thanks,
Drew

Drew,
Your best bet to answer all of these questions is to contact the NYSDEC in the area of the WMA http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7768.html

You'll find them very helpful. In my limited experience in hunting the WMA, I found that the ones I hunted did not require a permit, no gas motors and I felt like I was the only one out there (It was a small WMA)

Call them up for the WMA that you'd like to try and ask them all these questions. I know hunting in different states can be challenging especially trying to find out the laws.

Good Luck,
Jack
