Help IDing Mercury outboard

Hey guys. This motor was given to me years ago and I never got around to fixing it up. I?m planning to use it on my 16 ft garvey (the 15 Suzuki isn?t enough). I cannot seem to find the model number anywhere on this motor and I would like to get a manual and parts for it.

I?ve done many searches online on where to find the number to no avail. I even found out it can be on a freeze plug under the cowling and when I looked there it was scratched off. Which also has me scratching my head.

Does anyone have an idea of what year it is so I can order a manual? I?ll post a few pics.

The style of the cowling, the style and color scheme of the paint suggest to me this motor was produced in the early 70's.

Tags missing and numbers being scratched off suggest this motor may have been stolen, possibly stolen and recovered or still stolen and never recovered. I would expect to find a second set of numbers stamped on a more permanent place, than on a replaceable item like a frost plug. Inspect the crankcase itself for a serial number.
 
Google mercury cowling cover logo colors. They change every few years as models change and are one way to tell without spec plate attached. My guess is late 80,s as I had a 25 like it back then I bought new.
 
Call Mercury as they will be able to tell you. I know calling someone is old school but it does work well sometimes.
 
I agree with Dave, chances are the motor was stolen at some point. It's an industry around here.

Thanks guys. Looks to be early 80s. And i agree, at some point it must have been stolen. A real shame. I talked to a local merc dealer and did some more research and it looks like alot of the parts are no longer available. I think I will throw a new prop on my Suzuki and see how that performs for now and later down the road upgrade to a new larger motor.
