Hevi X shotshells from Hevi Shot?

When Hevi Shot first came out my cousin was a big wig at one of the national outdoor chains. The rep for Hevi Shot was coming to town and I was asked to go along on a duck hunt to try out the new shells. This was back in the day when my eyes were better but my shooting not as good as it is today.

I was amazed at the performance of the Hevi Shot. We hunted a place where I knew the distances from the blind. I normally shoot birds feet down and close to the boat. The rep kept telling us to shoot at the passing birds that were out there. I did. I shot one stone dead at 70 yards and couldn't believe it. It was at that time we coined the phrase "Why not, Hevi Shot". Told the rep I expect royalties. Guess they didn't like it.

After the freebies he left behind had been shot, I just could justify the expense of the shells. I'm too cheap.

I've always wondered why they don't mold aero aides into the Hevi Shot pellets? Harder to release?

Aero aide? would that be like the belt on Black Cloud pellets? or a fin? Either way I bet it would be a pain to get it to release from the mold.

I was thinking golf ball type of dimples. If anyone has done more research on making something round go long and straight I can't think of anyone. Please keep in mind this concept is coming from an uneducated aerodynamicist.

Mark I think dimpling is one of those things that theoretically would help but in the real world is impossible to achieve on that size of ball...well at least without a hefty cost.
I have heard of guys dumpling their round balls that they shoot out of smoothbore muzzleloader. Sounds like it's debatable if it's worth the effort.

Bob, if the hevix is slightly heavier than lead. a number 4 would be overkill. my father (90) years young, and I shot 1000's of ducks with lead 5's and 6's, 5 being preferred in 12ga, 6 in 20ga. 11/4 oz 23/4 shell, 1oz in 20 ga. great pattern density, pass through penetration.
#4 lead eq. is too course, too low a shot count for lead density and to much damage for smaller ducks. geese would be fine. seriously when you guys come out the correct shot sizes of your lead equivalent I am all in. thanks I will patiently await the #5s! Frank ps. I was in sales and marketing for 30 years, I understand profit, if it was me I would be pushing 31/2 in shells etc as well, what I say and what I do are not the same!!!!!

glad this topic came up and I didn't see it until a number of folks weighed in. I do believe that very simply, anything is better than steel among the bismuth, tungsten, hevi-shot crew. I've shot hevi metal for a while now to give myself that edge, knowing that I don't have the time, resources, or patience to reload myself. having said that, the hevi-X seems like a great marketing tool to fill their own void between hevi metal and hevi shot. a quick study of the Macks PW magazine I received recently showed that theres a noticeable leap in price from the 3" 1oz load to the 3" 1 1/4oz load. Also, they list a 3" 1 3/8oz load at an even faster fps than the 1 1/4oz...which I believe to be a typo. must be a 3.5" shell but anyway, ill buy Kent's bismuth every now and then but those sit at about $2/shell. Hevi-X came in under that. $1.20 for the 1oz load and $1.40 for the 1 1/4. this is "not much" over the $.83-1.10 range that I've paid for the hevi metals in the past depending on rebates and shipping etc. doesn't look like hevi shot is doing the rebates this year for money...not sure who really needs another choke or blind bag but that's marketing. anyway, ji may have to give the hevi-X a try.
 
Here's my slightly off topic question... why has the price of Hevi-Metal gone up since last season? Trying to persuade folks into the new Hevi-X?

I was a pretty habitual purchaser of the four box 'value pack' from Macks or wherever and it was always $99. This year it's $125. So $1.25 a shell. Whereas if you bought it by the box @ $25 it's $1 a shell. Doesn't seem like much of a value pack to me.

I know it patterns great out of my gun so I have been sticking with it...
 
I'm becoming a bit disconcerted with the Hevi X. In a land of shooters, ballistics is the bees knees and in a land of outdoor products reviews make the sale.

Yet, I can find no Trace if either a ballistics wonk giving insight nor a reviewer offering opinion and comparison. Not even a PR paid schill.

The only thing I've found is a number of people offering evidence that EMI, producers of Hevi, are rather expert marketers and prone to edging the land of misinformation.

It would seem the price/technology is not improved, just repackaged.
