Remember this?

I was in a cheese store (yep guys we have stores JUST for cheese) buying cheese for an out-of-state friend's care package. He never was a Wisconsin resident in body but must have been in spirit.

and it just happened to be Thursday when these are fresh, dated AND have the time of day on themView attachment curds.jpg

I always forget how good fresh curds are until the next time I find them. Fresh, sweet and squeeky.

I have one more cheese to get for my buddies care package (at a different cheese store) - a package or two of Liederkranz. It was AWOL for about 30 years and finally came back to Wisconsin two years ago.

You got to love that squeaky feeling on your teeth. That aged brick looks pretty good and the 5 year old cheddar wouldn't be bad either.

There is no way I can forget it, Pete. We lived out in the countryside east of Wausau and had several "local" cheese factories to go get fresh cheese at. Almost like all the pubs that once used to be there.

Prior to going to Green Valley, AZ to see my mother, I would always ask what was on her wish list for cheese---you guessed it, "Cheese Curds".

I always have to buy an extra bag just for the road trip home.

Tod,

I was at least in my 20's before I even heard of cheddar that wasn't orange. White cheddar isn't bad but it needs to taste more............... 'orange'.

Growing up in NY, which is a cheddar state to me as well, the cheddar was always white. It always cracked me up to go to buy a nice yellow/orange 5 or 7 year cheddar in WI.

You Guys!
You want cheese come to Monroe (the Swiss Cheese capital of the world) this Sept for our Cheese Days. You will be able to taste and buy any kind of cheese made. You'll be able to taste, buy, and see cheese curds made right in front of you but be ready to stand in line. Cheese DAys in Monroe bring over 100,000 people in a two day weekend. It's worth the trip.

It has to be that I was born and raised in WI and maybe why I am still single, but I have been know take a hunk of cheese in one hand and pretzels in the other and make my own combo's. :) though I am partial to the Cabot extra sharp white cheddar at Walmart, I can get it out here, its cheap and has good flavor.

The western WI guys might be familiar with this, but for a summer in college I bartended at Pettibone boat club in La Crosse, WI. They were apparently famous for the their deep fried curds. That summer they couldn't get them and the Manager wouldn't use any other source that didn't stack up. So we never served them that year, but I fielded calls all summer asking if we had gotten them yet, and most of the calls were from people hours away. I never did try them, next time I am down there I should see.

I still stop and get Landjager and curds when I drive home. But my favorite is still the Merkts port wine cheese or the swiss almond on Ritz crackers, it reminds me of grouse hunting and trout fishing trips when I was a kid.

Seems to me that when you get to Abbotsford, WI, if you had south towards Marshfield, you'll go right through Colby, WI. More cheese.

I worked as head life guard at Pettibone Beach in LaCrosse just North of the Pettibone boat house for four years probably before you (l946 to 1950).

I have family in Wisconsin. I never missed a wedding up there. Spotted Cow beer on tap and more cheese than a person could eat. Unfortunately for me they are all married now.

buddy brought a block of 5year aged cheddar from Wis on a fishing trip last year. It was great.
