Hey, dog gone it.....

I think Sarah did a dang good job last night by golly. I watched MSNBC and Fox afterwards so I couldn't be lumped into Sutton's "you are zombied by what you watch" drivel. Fair and balanced. What I saw was two distinct takes on the outcome. Fox didn't tear down Biden and MSNBC was attempting to crucify Palin on some moot points. I can only surmise that Sarah's performance scared the shit out of them.

I think you hit the nail on the head. They were expecting her to come in, embarass herself and the party, and instead she showed how versatile and down to earth she really is. She gets an A from me. Definitely didnt hear anything new from Biden that would make me want to change my vote.

She held her own. Nothing earth shattering. Her youth (lack of situational experience) shows at times and that is what the weekend comic writers prey upon, which is too bad... She did a good job playing her supporting role for McCain.

I'd never vote for Biden, but I thought he held his own pretty well too. Although there were a couple of times he sounded if he himself was running for the Presidency.

I particularly liked when she quoted Biden about Obama during the Dem. debates and said she watched those...what the hell could he say? I think the Obama/Biden ticket is backwards though. Biden would make a hell of a lot better President than Obama. I thought Biden did well too but only because his responses were timed....if he could have been Joe, he would still be answering the first question.

She performed much like she did when running for Govenor. Folksy. Don't get bogged down in details. Speak in a way that resonates with the people. Last night that was the women that crushed the Old School Alaska Republicans in 2006.

The one thing that she did not rebut Joe on was the McCain Health Care Plan. I really wanted to hear about that since if it gets anywhere will crush me financially.

This country is going to be at "war" for a while in various spots on the Earth. Nobody is stopping anything on that. We may change the venue, but it will continue. So war is a non issue. Taxes are always going to be happening. Sometimes they will be less and then they change and are more. They will always be here, so another non issue. Or rather symantic issue. Looking back over my 20 plus years of paying income taxes the huge variety of tax changes have either taken or left a few hundred dollars each April. Do I really care about a few hundred dollars as a critical part of electing a president? No. I car about the things that affect thousand of dollars of my money.

BC/BS of Alaska would charge me between $6,600 and $8,000 a year for an indivual policy. McCain's plan would give me $2,500 to cover part of that cost leaving me to come up with the remaining $4,100 to $5,500. Of course McCain thinks that the free market and open competition for the government money will lower the premiums. That is a big risk considering how well the free market is doing today. The rules that let mortgages be turned into stocks is still out there. How about insurance policies as stocks? Anyone?

The other thing that I have to consider is that I have a child support agreement that mandates that I provide insurance for my daughter. It is cheaper for me to do through work than her mom under her mom's self employed insurance. However, we do not have shared custody and my daughter is her mom's dependant and not mine. I will never see the $5,000 family tax credit is what this means. So the State of Alaska requires me to buy insurance for the kid which from BC/BS will be a $12,000 premium for 1+1 family coverage. With the $2,500 tax credit I now have to come up with $9,500 out of my own pocket. Now if I was able to get the lowest cost of $6,600 the difference for single coverage and 1+1 family is $5,400. The child support rules allow me to deduct this difference from the support I pay for my kid. I pay $9,800 for support a year on average so the deduction will lower that to $4,400. You know what that means? My ex will loose her house since she uses part of the money for the mortgage at the begining of the month and then coasts the rest of the month on her invoice payments she gets from her clients.

We could change and her mom could get coverage for her, but then that is more money out of my pocket since the rules require the deduction to now become an addition to the child support. Screwed either way.

And if there is an opt out part of the plan and my employer keeps providing insurance the McCain plan will tax my benefits for health care since they will be considered income. That will be $11,500 in additional income for me. Another tax bracket and less money in my pocket. I know that I said that taxes have only been a few hundred dollars in differences, but this is a principle issue with McCain saying that he wants to lower taxes on the middle class, but here is a tax increase. That hypocracy doesn't fly with me.

Biden did a good job of putting the debate on this issue out there and Sarah didn't take it. That is typical of her style when she knows she can't win on something. Move on and hope people forget.

I guess the one hope I have is that the McCain Health Care Plan will have to go through congress and the senate and it is so bad for the people that it will be much like the Social Security reform that W kept bringing up when elected to his second term. How is that reform going these days?

Of course the insurance market may look at the Government Cheese and lobby to make this happen and then screw everyone over and not cover anything.

Right now the insurance system is only "broken" for people that are not full time employed. Guys like me just have to deal with the deductible creap up every year. Other than that there is nothing wrong with how my insurance works.

Not sure I read it all that way Ray. As an employer, I get quotes every year for our group policy. I also sponser an HR125 plan that allows the employees portion to be paid "pre tax". Individual policys are WAY less expensive than group policies since group policies require any employee to be covered no matter the pre existing illness. I see the being able to shop anywhere intra state and interstate as a HUGE plus. Right now, I could have each employee go to Michigan BC/BS and buy a policy that is 10 times better for 1/2 the cost of the group plan we have now. Every year I agonize over the reduction in benefits I have to do so I can afford to continue to offer it. The way I see it, if you are on a group policy that is split with the employee...the tax credit goes to your portion thereby saving you that much. Personally, I would love to see more specifics and a total tax credit for health insurance no matter who supplies it. It is getting to where business is insured to death or choose to do away with it altogether for survival. Tort reform and medical reform is needed more than insurance reform.

The "usual and customary" health care costs in Alaska are typically twice what a person would pay their doctor in your neck of the woods. All of my employment has been with companies based in the States so most of my health care coverage was based on rates in California or Florida. When the claims are submitted a good portion gets denied and I pay more out of pocket. The Alaska doctors need to pay for their planes, remote cabins, and fishing boats, so they charge more than anywhere else in the nation.

Currently I am employed by the largest government contractor in the US (150,000 employees) so they have negotiated group rates that are significantly lower than any prior employer. And they have more in network providers up here than any other past employer's insurance.

Now to the actual point. The cost of my current insurance to my employer is about $11,500 (I pay $3,730 of that through pre tax payroll deduction). I could get a BC/BS of Alaska policy that would have a lower premium and knock about $3,000 off that $11,500, but then it is all coming out of my pocket and not my employers. The pre tax deduction is gone and my taxes increase.

If I could get a policy that is. Being a fat middle aged guy I doubt if they would want to cover me without charging a higher premium that would be closure to what my employer is paying. My last physical stunned the doctor. Looking at the test results shows me to be in perfect health for a guy that is 70 pounds overweight. I learned two years ago that I can only get affordable life insurance through my employer. No private insurance company will sell me a life policy that is affordable due to my belly. Loosing the belly slowly, but still.

In certain markets private health coverage could be a great benefit to employees of small business that do not have the purchase power like my employer does.

My real issue is that I have to follow a variety of state laws covering child support that are based on the presumption of employer provided insurance. If it all goes private there is a huge effect on how things are calculated for support and it could wipe out the majority of the support payment for the child - it will go to pay insurance premiums instead. If this change goes through every state will have to re write their child support laws. In effect an unfunded mandate against the states.

I agree that changes need to be made to tort law and insurance so providers stop covering their butts by charging out your behind for services. Do you know how much a pair of floats cost for a Super Cub? $20,000 new and then about $10,000 to install them and have the plane re inspected by the FAA. Rates are going up each year to cover this stuff.

Ray, I see Obama's plan as ridding Alaska of doctors then.I'm sure the Doctors on this site have opinions on the socialization of healthcare. Look how much they love medicare and medicaid. I guess it probably boils down to whether you want medical care or not.

Lee, unless I am already a patient receiving medicaid/medicare treatment I can't get a doctor up here. The flat fees of the government system don't cover much of the usual and customary costs up here so doctors stopped accepting new medicare/medicaid patients about 4 years ago. Unless you have insurance as part of your retirement plan you don't want to retire up here expecting the government system to help you out. I have 25 years to go so I am looking at my options for private coverage. If I am lucky I will stick with this firm for that time and buy their stuff as part of the retirement package.

I would vote for W. again before I voted for Obama. Yeah, that's right. Just can't vote for someone that supports abortions of convenience. That and he doesn't seem to love America. And whole bunch of other issues that I am too tired to type out. But I am bracing myself for him winning as he has fooled much of America. Where is America going and why is it in this hand basket?
