No question John, I"ve always thought those things are nasty. Maybe not nasty with a capital "N" nasty, but nasty.

I was going to get out Wednesday, but with the weather, I'm not so sure I want to deal with it.
 
Thats an old Italian made soft plastic goose by Plasti-cast. I think they made them for a short time for Cabellas. I have two but only put one out for this photo op, just for you.
I have to work the next few days and it just seems to be a waste of time going out before work for geese. They just don't start flying early enough to make it worth while. Just when I get back to the dock they seem to be coming in as I'm walking up to the office. Then when I come back out after opening the shops they are all over the place. If I could shoot right from my slip I could get my limit of each species every day. Due to the ice-eaters in the basin it's loaded with everything from Blacks, Mallards, Buffy, Canada Geese, Hooded Mergs, Swans and the occasional odd duck. I'll have to take some photos and post them up. It looks like feeding time at the local park some days.
If we end up closing due to weather on Wednesday I will head out. Otherwise, I won't be out again till Friday and of course the weekend.

Some times it works and some times it does'nt. I have them set up on a long line and each one has a slightly different length leader. The tide had just turned and was running out so I was just about to move the weight on the end of the line to break it up a bit when I took the picture. I will also put a few up on the beach or on the edge of the marsh island. Success varies and I'm always trying something different.
 
Thanks for the reply. I try different things each season myself. Do you ever have Brant or Snows decoy into your Canada spread there?

I don't get any Snows around here but we do have a huge population of Brant. The Brant will decoy into almost any spread if your set up where they want to feed. I can always depend on getting my limit of Brant each day if I set up on a shallow mud flat or sand bar that gets exposed at low tide. I will usually only hunt them for the low tide of the day. You can pretty much set your watch and wait for them to start coming in.
 
Must be pretty neat to hunt the tidal water. I've never done that. I've heard that Brant have a strong odor to them. Is this true? table fare? Do you hunt any divers or seaducks?

I have hunted fields before but enjoy the salt water much more. Brant is strong but I find it to be good table fare when prepared properly. I'm sure some guys will disagree. It really depends on what they have been feeding on, that can have an impact on their taste. I don't do any gunning for Sea Ducks because that is one family of birds I will not eat and I won't take any bird or animal I will not eat. I'm just not a trophy hunting kind of guy.
If I need some smaller birds for dog training I will on occasion take a diver and just use it in a mystery meat dish. But I don't take them often, just a personel thing. I prefer Blacks and Mallards over Sea Ducks and divers. I have had guys tell me if I can eat Brant I could eat a Sea Duck. I had a guy hunt with me who did take a Sea Duck and did not want it so I took it and tried to feed it to the dog and she refused to eat it. So, if the dog wont it it I'm just not willing to try either.

I can understand you not wanting to hunt something you can't use. I'm the same way. Seems like you could season up the seaducks heavy to cover the taste, have you ever tried making jerky out of them? I'm just guessing as I have never had the chance to hunt seaducks, so I haven't tried eating them. I'm from Indiana. I really enjoy hunting divers when I get the chance. I shoot quite a few Mallards, Greater Canadas, Blacks, Wood ducks, etc. most seasons, and the divers are a great change of pace to me. I hope to someday hunt divers, seaducks, and Brant. It's interesting to see the different methods, styles, habitat, birds, etc. on this board.

My brother tried making Brant jerkey and his wife told him never to do it again in the house. The smell was bad and it did not taste to good.
If you ever come to NY during the season look me up and we'll go shoot some Brant and divers.
 
Well that answers that question, LOL. Maybe grind them up and make a chili? Just trying to think of different things to do with the meat. But you are talking to a guy that enjoys Lion and Bobcat, soooooo .... LOL. I appreciate the offer on the hunt, I'm sure it would be a great time. What all kinds of ducks do you see there in huntable numbers? If you ever want to come over and do some hunting here let me know. I have access to some great land, if the birds are in.
 
For the most part around here it's Brant, Blacks, Mallards, Buffys, Canada Geese. We do get a mix of other birds but these are the main birds you would get.
 
Do you shoot many hybrids there (Mall/Blacks)? Have shot quite a few here. What kind of Canada Goose "subs" ya shoot there? Here it is mainly Greaters, with a few Lessers mixed in, although I have seen some smaller Canadas which I'm guessing were Richardson's mixed in flocks. But have yet to harvest one. We see a few Snows/Blues here from time to time, and I harvested a Ross' back in 98. Our main birds are the same as yours pretty much, minus the Brant and Buffs. But we do get some Buffs, here. But not in numbers to give a great shot at harvesting one in a short period of time. But to give you an idea of the different types of waterfowl found here, I have harvested over 20 different species in 10 yrs or so of hunting here. But most seasons it's Mallards, Blacks, Woodies, Canadas that make up the bulk, like i mentioned before, with a sprinkle of the "others". But back in 98-99, it was way different. Lots of different birds, and LOTS of them. Would limit out in 30-60 minutes many days, unless we were out to make the day of it, then we would pass up alot of birds. Picking and choosing what we would shoot, and savor the sights.
 
Chili works jsut fine---DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONSIME LEFTOVERS!! Kinda smells similar to hartz mountain turtle food, if left overnight!!
I did it cubed a number of years back for an end of year party--Guys thought it was venison--next day, it reeked!! My old lab, Brant, even turned up her nose..

I figured you would get some Eider, Old Squaw, and Scoters up that far north. And always thought the whole East Coast had Greater Snows in the fall/winter. Shows how much I know. Do you have any photos of Brant hunts you care to share?
 
John, i did find the breasts were quite good--defat completely, slice into thin strips--3/8" maximum--heat a pan add olive oil, some garlic, then the brant, lightly salted and peppered, sear, turn and cook for about another minute--you want rare to med. rare--serve with crusty bread some good beer or red wine! makes a good appetizer
