Hey Worth! If you're watching, here's one you likely don't have!

Check out the bad boy in the middle. This is not the first, but very near the first ever, legal, sport shot Purple Swamphen. They are MONSTROUS compared to Purple Gallinule, Moorhen, Coot....their babies are the size of all those birds. They are another invasive that has made itself at home in South Florida.

Now that is sweet! GReat looking blackbellies to. Just looking at that picture I swear I can hear them whistling. I shot a purple gallinule this rail season, I think that guy could eat him!

Damn, what a beak on that thing!
Looks like you had a great hunt.

Or have a commenorative decoy carved?
Its one cool lookingbird, like a purple gallinule on steroids!

NICE Jason would be jealous as am i with all those blackbellies. havent heard from u in a while we need to get together and do a hunt before the season goes out.

Thanks y'all!!! We had a great day and that Purple Swamphen sure made it even better. The blackbellies were fun b/c it started out as some pass shooting, but after doing a little watching, picking up our decoys and moving we had them coming into us, feet down, 20 yd shots and lordy were there HUNDREDS!!! Lots of fun. They are such a cool bird.

Fred-

You're welcome out here all the time......and it's quite a bit warmer here :)

Tim-

We definitely need to get together again...and I'll be getting a hold of you soon...you been out to the spot on the river yet???

Kris-

I did get some more! They were everywhere and instead of sitting around waiting for ducks that weren't flying I decided to leave the Stumpdancer at the decoys and go see if I could get a few birds. I did get three. Lots of people around so I didn't set up and wait out the swamphens and get them as they would come back. They are a lot of fun...they actually fly fairly well too. So, I did get three and will post some more pictures soon.

Carl-

We're not allowed to keep the birds for personal use, so sadly no mount...i'm not even supposed to eat them. A shame really b/c I bet they'd be as good as moorhen or coot.

Hope everyone had a GREAT NEW YEAR! Mine was good for sure.

That is a shame, do you have to destroy them or can you donate them to a university collection or museum, etc...?

At least you've got great pics!

I've found the juvenile moorhens to be much better eating than the adults. Havent shot them in years though, our gallinule season used to open with early teal but now its during regular duck season. Hunting them in early teal season was easy, they were everywhere. I think most of ours migrate even farther south, I know the purples do.
