Marty Kristiansen building a Highlands Box for my personal use. This is the 1st time Marty's work has been documented on the Internet. I hope to document most of the process for all to see. This boat was designed by Ozzie Thomas in the early 1970's. The design was influenced by earlier Gus Heinrichs boats and has been modified slightly over the years. This boat has more sheer and crown than the original. The hull has been popped from the mold and is currently sitting in the jig. The inside ribs are being laid out where the floor boards will eventually be attached

This will be a very useful post! I like the jig he is using to locate the ribs.

What are the LOA and beam?

Do you know the lamination schedule? Is it mat-roving-mat or did he use some fancier products?

Steve LOA 12' 3". Beam is 48"
The fiberglass I believe is woven mat the ribs are being hot glued in place to tack them down the will be glassed in individually with hairy mat then the inside of the hull will get another layer of fiberglass to encapsulate the ribs
 
Larry, thanks for posting these photos. I am a fan of Marty's sneakboat. It is on the list of boats to own. I will be following this post with interest.

Anyone who is looking for a traditionally styled sneakbox with modern updates should look hard at Marty's boats. These boxes run great in rough water as well as can get up and go when it's calm. If I were to replace my Fricke this is what I would get.
 
Ditto, What Craig said. Marty builds nice boats. Wood, fiberglass or metal Marty is a craftsman.

Steve I have the boat builder with me now I will answer your question on the lay Up of the Kristiansen Sneak box. 3layers of 20 oz Bonded woven and Mat, wet on wet.In the Bottom. On the floor board ribs, used 1 layer of 10oz hairy matt over all ribs one piece.

Was at the shop today for a few minutes to check on progress and to document the build further. Ribs are now glassed in. Nose block has been installed. The inner clamp made from oak has been fitted and is awaiting 5200 and bronze screws to make it s permanent piece of the hull.

Great photos and information! That nose piece looks like PVC lumber (Azek or the like). How thick is it? (I'm wondering if he laminated a couple of layers.)

Steve it is the same type of laminate that is in the transom it's about 1 1/4". The nose is 2 piece with a wedge that goes up the center line

Hull looks great, looks a lot larger in pics. I like the cut out to clamp the bow block, guess you guys have done a few boats together... Keep up the great pics...
 
Steve, The nose block & transom are MBO Board the nose bock is 2 Pcs. of three Quarter Bonded with 5200 together. As you will see in later pictures. all the present pictures havent been bonded or screw in yet just pre fitting.Most of all the bonding is down with 5200. Better than epoxy.

I agree re the Fast Cure! I picked up a tube by mistake last year - they really mean fast! I could not work it/fair it at all. I scraped it off and started over with the straight 5200.
