Highlands BBSB Build

Been a little more than a week since I have been to the shop. Inner clamp has been attached to the hull with 5200 and bronze screws. The deck carlings have been shaped and attached to the lower clamped. Gussets have been fitted and the ribs for where the bin will be has been glassed in. It's really starting to take shape. The true wood working ability of Marty Kristiansen is really starting to show. Carlings are made from clear white cedar the lower clamp and gussets are MDO board

Good morning, Larry~

Great photos once again. I was surprised to see the PVC "ribs" installed on the bilges - would have thought the curvature of the hull would provide adequate stiffness there.

BTW: I believe instead of "MBO" you mean MDO - Medium Density Overlay plywood. It's the paper-faced plywood manufactured as "sign board". I used it for the sides on Cassiopeia's pilothouse last fall - great product.

Beautiful work and craftmanship! Of course you all know that building a duckboat with wood encapsulated in fiberglass is a sacrilegous effort. Just ask any of the folks marketing "modern" fiberglass duckboats! Good to see that someone still builds a sneakbox with this kind of meticulousness.
 
Made it to the shop for the weekly update. The lattice for the bin is now installed the bins and shelf have been primed the deck carling for the dog hatch have been installed the bulkhead has been glassed in the the nose block has been tied into the deck carlings. The next step will be the planning and fitting of the floor boards with the floor boards being primed and installed then the combings will be installed and the stations will be installed then the deck will be laid up. This build is really kicking in to high gear.

Good morning, Larry~

Great stuff! I note the wisdom of getting interior paint on BEFORE the decks go on.

A couple of questions:

1) Looks like the "storage bins" are different - lattice on the portside and solid-bottom on starboard. Are these wet and dry areas?

2) Will there be any access into the forward compartment - a Beckson deck plate through the bulkhead or the deck itself?

Steve they are both dry areas the lattice is there to prevent debris and trash to get under the floor board but everything is designed to be able to hose it out. The bins are more for storing bulkier items gun, life jacket etc.

The forward area of the bulkhead is going to be airtight and quite small. There will be no access.
 
The floor boards have been shaped fitted and installed clear white cedar with stainless steel screws counter sunk. Next step is the center boards, stubs and combings then paint for the inner hull and soon it will be time to layup the deck

Floor boards are complete the hatches are framed out and the inside of the hull has been primed and painted with Pettit paint next the deck will be laid up

Yes I'm very happy with it thus far. Marty says dry hull weight will be right at about 200lbs
 
The deck has been laid up and is waiting to be married to the hull. Then the shoes will be fastened to the bottom of the hull. The hatches, oar locks and decoys racks will be made. Then all that will be left is some paint hardware and for the canvases to be installed.

Larry, Stopped by Marty's the other day. The boats very impressive. Unfortunately for Marty I think most people have know idea of what goes into the build when they see the finished boat down a Tuckerton. Thanks for documenting the build. The construction techniques are very different today then from 1978 when I built mine with Ozzie

The deck has been attached to the hull with 5200 and Bronze screws. The deck has been feather edged to a hull an improvement from the original design the drain plug has been drilled. Only things left are to turn it over mount the shoes to the bottom. Cut the forward hatch, combings, decoy racks, hatches, oar locks and hardware.
