I wanted to share what I found hollowing cork for the first time. I don’t need to do it as I hunt form the boat.
I started working on some over size divers. These are 21% larger than life size. All the same body pattern.
Using my last piece of Duck Blind cork I made an upright blue bill.
Finished weight: 2 lb 11.3 oz
With keel and lead to self right. 3 lb 10.5 oz
A little heavy.
Now I’m using some Jelinek Cork, this stuff is much denser and heavier than the Duck Blind material. I made two identical decoys, one full with cork and one with a cedar bottom board. I’m wanting to see if there is any difference in the two.
Note, the band sawed out bodies weight 3lbs 8.3 oz
First is the full cork, hollowed out to about 1 inch thickness all around.
Body only: 2 lb 1.6 oz
Finished decoy: 2 lb 9.4 oz
Next cork with cedar bottom board. Hollowed to 1 inch.
Body only: 2 lb 2.4 oz
Finished decoy: 2lb 9.6 oz
So I was able to take out about 1 lb 6 oz out of the decoys. I thought there would be a little more difference in the weight of the two, but they are essentially the exact same.
What is interesting is that the hollowed out Jelinek cork is the same weight as a solid Duck Blind cork decoy.
I’m curious if it will take any less weight to self right the hollow decoys. I’ll report back after I do that.
