Home built boat insurance

Things have changed as far as getting home built boat insurance, at least in Mississippi, since I built the Peregrine in 2004. I had the boat insured through Zurich (via Heritage Marine). I got a notice they were getting out of the boat insurance business in Mississippi and am left without coverage. So far I've struck out with State Farm, Progressive, and essentially with Farmers (they want a survey. I guess worst case scenario I could get a survey; of course I would rather not.) Progressive's beef was it was a wooden boat. It's not really a wooden boat but a composite. Attempts to educate them about this was just wasted time. I just did the online application with Boat US, but if memory serves me right they've denied me in the past.

Anyone out there having any luck with someone besides State Farm, Farmers, Progressive, Zurich or Boat US?

Don't say you've insured it on your homeowners. This will not cover you for liability out on the water.

Really, all I need is liability anyway. I'm not concerned about losses on the value of the hull, motor or trailer.

Ed,

Well, my boat is registered under homeowners for damage while parked in the drive, on the road or water. But as you said, it doesn't cover liability. For liability, my policy just changed to Travelers. Not sure if they will insure in your area or not. Good luck.

Thanks,
Ryan

I have State Farm for my snowgoose. The agent wanted a picture, but not a survey. In past discussions, I remember that some State Farm agents covered home built wood boats and some said they couldn't. She did have to do some checking before she would agree to cover it.

ed, what HP prodrive does the peregrine have. don't i remember you saying you were getting out of marsh hunting and going to the rice fields?

Won't an umbrella policy cover liability for home, auto, or boats?
I have my Bluebill and homebuilt houseboat insured with Austin Mutual.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Kris it's a 25 hp Prodrive. I plan to hunt most of the season in Arkansas but I don't want to give up the option of a couple of hunts out of the WMA'S in SE LA. There are a couple of weeks closed in AR that are open in LA if I'm not mistaken.

Rick the way umbrella policies work is that they require you to have insurance up to a certain amount on all your cars, boats, house, etc., then insure you for liability over the limits of the policies on everything you own. An umbrella policy isn't going to cover you for liability on things that aren't insurable, like a hovercraft or your backyard rocket ship for instance. I have an umbrella policy with State Farm and they require liability insurance on the Peregrine for up to $300,000 with a AAA rated company.

Boat US actually sent me a conditional approval. I'll see what happens when I send in the application with pictures.
