Homemade Layout Blind

With the early NC waterfowl season rapidly approaching (October 7-10) it has become apparent that unless another monsoon hits the Eastern sea board many of the places I hunt will not have the amount of water required to hunt our stationary blinds.

In order to hunt the area we would like to on opening day, we may have to utilize layout blinds to be within gunning range of the birds in the area. In lieu of spending $150-200 on a layout blind that will get use once or twice a year, do any of you have pictures of a basic DIY layout blind?

Weight and mobility is not necessarily an issue for we will be able to deliver them via skiff to the area we intend to hunt.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

My gunning box/coffin serves the same function as one of the modern fabric + frame blinds - and is truly waterproof. I think you could build one for about $100 in materials - and they lend themselves to mass production. We've knocked out 5 in a day with many hands (does not include 'glassing and canvas).

Thank you for sharing the gunning box plans. Your precision & attention to detail in all aspects of waterfowling never ceases to amaze me! It looks like If I want to have one built prior to the season opener I will have to put things in overdrive.

I may have to go with a more basic solution due to time constraints prior to this early season split, but can hopefully have one constructed before the start of our first "real" season on November 14th.

Thank you again for sharing your wisdom and hopefully Ill have a gunning box to show off mid November!

Laying on a camping pad with burlap pulled over top has worked for me. If it's shallow water, add a camping cot. Having said that, I built the coffin box off of Steve's sight. It much better than the store bought layout blind I have. You'd be surprised how fast they go together. It wouldn't be duck season if you weren't rushing to finish a last minute project. Good luck
 
guess you don't have many snow sleds in NC, but I have seen some large plastic concrete mixing pans that could be fashioned into make shift blinds.....until you have time to make your Sanford or the like boxes. I am up to the point where I am glassing mine. Would have been done if I did not find a sunfish to rebuild.
