Goose is getting excited too!

Good morning, Craig~

Great to see all this progress - you are moving right along!

On the other hand, I'm not sure that fan on the stern deck will provide sufficient propulsive force for such a large vessel......

All the best,

SJS

When it a 100 degrees out any moving air helps.

speaking of propulsion, what is everyones opinion on outboards? I am leaning toward Yamaha 70 or 75 and the Honda 75.

The Yamaha 70 is suppose to be a lighter outboard.

Very Nice!

As I'm sure you know, most of us that own the Devlin's are strongly in the max rated HP camp.

As an aside, If you do the backyard builders HP calculation, you may find that the max listed HP by Devlin is slightly (or maybe more than slightly) below what would be max the USCG calculation.

Builders are usually happy if they put Devlin's listed max on them. I don't know the Honker as well as the others, but the hulls take a lot of HP to get the performance most expect from a custom hunting machine. Snowgoose is rated for a 40, I have a Yamaha 40 and I've been happy with the HP. No doubt another 10 would not be a problem, though. Seems like you will be happy with the 70-75. Of the Zuke, Honda, Yamaha, I'd get the lightest or least expensive (or both).

I think Suzuki comes in as lightest and cheapest of the 3.
Thing is also what dealer is closer for convenience

two stroke 90/75.

are you going used or new? I like old stuff - you can work on it yourself for simple things, and there are lots of good mechanics around if you have a more complex issue at hand. parts are cheap, etc. 90s era outboards or 2000s non fuel injected.

either that or brand spankin if you have the cash. a loan on any part of a duckboat is crazy.

The plan is to go new. Quality is more important than price.

After looking at the Suzuki, Yamaha, and Honda, the Yamaha 70 hp comes in as the lightest of all by 90 pounds. Waiting on prices from the dealers.

The Honker is rated for 70hp. I made the Honker 19' which is a foot longer than specs.

Id personally get a Yamaha then. 70/90 should do nicely on that hull. 70 will be plenty, I think.

I think if you flipped a coin it would work. I would max out the recommended hp. Dealer network in your area is a big deal especially when it breaks and it will sooner or later.

My Honker is 19'3" and 91" beam.

I have a 1993 Yamaha 60hp tiller on it. It will push 32 mph. Full load with 4 people.. 28 mph.

Play with the props to get the most out of it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

That is a good looking Chessie.

Well I've heard back from one marina. These are the prices he gave me, with tiller installed.

Honda 75 $ 9994.00
Yamaha 75 $ 9676.00
Yamaha 70 $ 8866.00

They were also asking about props Aluminum or SS. Since this is mainly to hunt with I assume I want Aluminum ? We have mainly rocky shores here in Ks or at least the reservoirs I have hunted at are.

Mounting of the motor to the boat they want 210.00 to do. That seems a little steep to set a motor on the back of a boat but I have never messed with anything bigger than a 25hp so what are your thoughts on that?

Nice headpiece on your chessie! Rich

Goose says Thanks!

Hey Craig, just a thought, have you tried looking at Tohatso?
They are owned and made by Honda now, should be cheaper.
and I'd still look at Suzuki, their tiller has tach and t&t, and it's a nice long handle

I run SS only. The aluminum wear to fast, and do not hold up to sticks or rocks. My theory is if you hit something hard enough to wreck the hub, you messed up lower unit anyway.

While I think $210 is ridiculous, is it really worth the hassle when you are forking out $9-10,000?

Never heard of Tohatso I look into it. Still waiting on the Suzuki dealer to get back with me.

the yamaha 70 is a very light, great running motor. yamaha has a good tiller handle too if thats what you are going with. even if it was more expensive yamaha would be my choice.

if you wanted a 2 stroke that has been completely gone through, the outboardexchange.com rebuilds, warrantys, and pretty ups the motors. i think they are in guilford ct. they have a good reputation and it a good way to get a very nice 2 stroke without problems

You might save substantially buying online. If your work doesn't have a dock that can take the delivery, you can always pick up at the trucking company's local terminal. All you need is a tree with a well placed limb and a chain hoist, or an engine hoist to hang the motor. Warranty is warranty.... your local guy submits to the factory for reimbursement even if you don't buy from them. As for the dealer's fee to mount the motor, you are talking about 2 guys for 1-1.5 hours labor. Their charge isn't really unreasonable.

Outboard Exchange Chris, is right next to Hillyers in Waterford, CT. I haven't dealt with them though.
