hoodie body

I'm carving a hooded merganser for my son - to commemorate our duck hunting trip to Iowa this year. He was very excited to get a hoodie. I saved the head and used it for a head pattern, but I still need to figure out the body.

This will be a shelf sitter. I don't plan on making it a decorative bird, but just a symbol.

What I'm looking for are some suggestions for the body. I'm trying to figure out the tail attitude, general shape (oval, tear-drop, fat tear-drop, football) and some general dimensions for the body.

I still have the head in the freezer, but it is starting to small a little (thank God for a tolerant wife). I hope to use it some more as a reference while finishing the head.

Hunting trip to Iowa, that was funny when I first read that, I dream of everywhere else but Iowa to duck hunt. Then I looked back through all the pictures from some hunts from this year and well I can't complain at all !!

#1 TAKE BOB UP ON THE INVITE! You will learn more there than anywhere I can think of to compare him too.

Here some of mine I have made. Mostly tear drop shaped body and tail if that makes sense to you. Don't really have a good close up of them.

They are not shelf sitters but have had many a hoodie floating by them and don't laugh at them after going over to Bob's !

Thanks Bob,

But I want the "mouth drop open expression" people get looking at your work!! :)

I will keep trying to raise the bar!

If it comes out as good as yours - I'll be pleased. Bob has been a great inspiration to me. He lives near me and has done a good job of teaching me the basics on many fronts. But, having a great teacher will never make your work great. I still have much to learn and that means making mistakes. Is is really dis-satisfaction that makes the engine of striving race.

Bob:
I will be calling. I might shoot for Sunday, but I put a new faucet in today and my back is KILLING me. I hope it is better in the morning.
