Hope I am not bragging,

because I don't like to brag. Maybe a little more proud. At least it made me smile.

I have been on a bit of a roll lately, carving, and giving away a few new birds. Knowing this, my friend asked me to carve and donate a decoy for the Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carver's Association Show this past weekend. I decided to do a drake Ring Necked duck because, well, just because. So, I got to work messing around with this bird. I thought it looked pretty good, certainly fine for it's intended use as a simple gunner.

The proud part comes in, because this simple, little gunner fetched a whopping $225, of which I agreed to donate 100% to the club! I'm still trying to figure out exactly why, as I thought there were some other birds there that looked a whole lot better than mine, and didn't bring as much. But for whatever reason, I am smiling.

It's simple John, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I made 3 blackducks this past year all of the same material and i like one better than the other 2.

I think it's an ideal gunner; put back 10 yards in a flock of them and you would have trouble telling which was the decoy! And if someone put some shot in it or it gets dropped and has a few dings it will still be able to do its job, or you can easily repair it. I've seen only a few flocks in salt water, and have one mounted in a swimming position as a reference. Used to see some on big lakes in Ct when the smaller bodies of water had frozen up. Those little buggers can really turn on the afterburners! Nice carving and paint job,Jon.

That is really great, Jon. Congratulations to you and to the folks who bid on that beautiful decoy you created.

Good morning, Jon~

Well, I usually hesitate to congratulate Bald-faced Braggarts...but....that's a fine bird for a fine cause. As others have observed, he's a sweet little gunner in all respects. I'll bet your next donated bird brings even more.

Congratulations!

You're not bragging--just showing pride in work that was appreciated and a donation to a good cause. And you should! That's a sweet little decoy.

Great work Jon, thanks for sharing because we all get joy seeing a fellow carver/hunter receive this kind of honor.

I should've described. Hollowed Western Red Cedar body, (run whatcha bring, kinda thing), basswood head, pine keel with poured lead insert. Acrylic paints. Glass eyes.

Thanks, Jon

Jon,
great job. We really appreciate your donation. The auction was a great success because of people like you.
Next year if I donate a bird it will be a Ring Neck in your honnor.
Ken
Good seeing you at the show.

Congratulations great bird for a great cause. I carved a loon a few years ago for DU banquet and the guy who won picked it over guns, prints and knives. The pick of the litter raised $1800 for DU so needless to say I was stoked. I don't sell my works pretty much do it for fun but it was pretty cool.
