Just curious as to how many will be using a 28gauge for ducks this season and what type of gun.

Got a great deal on a barely used Ceasar Guerini Tiempo Light 28ga with ammo, case, and cleaning kit for $900.00. I have not seen it or shot it yet. Friend of mine is a Fl real estate broker and an apartment he was selling had the gun in it and the wife wanted it gone. Now it is mine. I will make a report after I pick it up during Thanksgiving.

Just bought 28 ga barrels for my 20 ga 686. Once they're fitted, the 28 on a 20 frame 686 will usurp the BPS 28 I've shot the past couple of seasons. We're trying an ITX load this year in addition to the wildcat hevishot load that has proven deadly on everything from swans to sea ducks.

The MLB's talked me into the 28 for ducks a couple of years ago, I had been using the 28 for a variety of clay target games, upland hunting and railbirds but not for ducks. I have been using a browning model 12 repro, Remington 1100 and when things are just right, in fresh water only, a Krieghoff K-20 w/28 ga. bbls. It was very satisfying to confirm that any waterfowl inside 35 yards can be killed clean, with good ammo. The 28 has been my all-around favourite for 30 years, I always wondered when it's popularity would take off. Tom Reder/MLBTom turned me on to a good reload with ITX shot, but I believe the Hevishot factory load at 1300 fps to be a little better. Or maybe I'm just a good consumer helping the economy.

I like shooting my ducks AFTER they've hatched.

I'll bet a 28 would have picked off that duck on the bow of your boat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, with out leaving a 6 inch hole. :>) :>)

I will be using my Rizzini O/U with 30" barrels and either Bismuth or Hevishot reloads. This gun has been my all around favorite for the past 5 years for sporting clays, upland and a few ducks. This year it will get the nod a lot more for ducks.

I used a Belguim Browning A5 for years til Thanksgiving 2 3/4 but 3 years ago I bought a Benelli M2 3 inch 20 ga and cant put it down...even for geese..and its only 5 lbs 9 oz

I would but just can't bring myself to lay it in the bottom of the boat. Will shoot clays and grouse w/ my 28 Wingmaster but for ducks the 20 ga express gets the nod.

None for me this season but it is on the short list to purchase in the next few years. will probably go with a CZ ringneck like my 12ga.

Wis Boz, I've been using my 28 for about 5 years now and have learned it is all the gun we need to kill ducks and geese and am glad to see your enthusiasm for this wonderful little gun. I've come to realize that waterfowling is subjective and conforms to personal taste. I'm still suprised though when so many talk of using 12 ga. 3 1/2-2's or 10 ga's with BB's. I got a kick out of DU magazine a few years ago running an article called something like "taking birds really close" and went on to talk about these guys who shoot their birds really close (which I applaud) but when they discussed guns and ammo, they were using 12 ga.'s with 2's and BB's. I scratched my head and wondered what those birds looked like after getting freight trained at 15 yds with 1-3/8 oz of steel BB's. For me the game has always been and always will be fooling the birds and putting them right on the X as my buddy Hackey says. There is nothing more thrilling to me than to watch a brace of birds work the spread and sit down right where you wanted them to!

With that you can then pick your kill zone and if you want it at 15 yards you can do it with 28's effectively. As I said in a post earlier my buddy Mark and I started using .410's last year and I was amazed at the results. I killed Eiders on the east coast 2 seasons ago with my 28, then geese later. After this I realized you can kill em with a slingshot if they're close enough so the next logical move is to the smallest gun, the tiny .410! I killed mallards, pintail and woodies to start with then took it up north and killed Redheads and bluebills next. The kicker was late season laying in a snow covered field and having geese come in, sitting up and killing one clean with this little popgun! What a thrill! As I said above that guys will always want 10 an 12 ga guns with big shot and I guess that's their gig, so be it but for me it's up close, right in front of me and using little guns! I'm trying to figure out a way to legally hunt with the new Ruger .410 pistol called the JUDGE! Man would that be a hoot taking a bird with that baby! Enjoy your 28 and when you are looking for yet another challenge try the tiny tot of shotguns, the .410. Here's a pic of my grandson with his first bird ever taken with my Red Label 28. A week later he stood up and dropped a true double with it, needless to say Grampa was pretty proud -MLB Tom

Tom,
that shot of your grandson is a great tribute to passing along the shooting tradition. What a Day that must have been.

Do you have any thoughts on the ITX through tight chokes? I have a Fox and am looking to put up a few loads for the late season. I need a nice light load that I can keep from being too Tight on the pattern paper.

On the 410, it is a real challenge to get the birds in that close and a dead one shows the all around skill of the hunter who did it. But I would caution that it is not for those who cant hold back if the birds dont make it all the way in, esp geese. There are mighty few pellets in that shell.

Yes, Jim, the same one. In fact I have about 3-4 boxes reloaded that I was going to use in my Remington 1100 Sporting 28 but that gun was a POS and is long gone. I never could keep that gun working for a whole trip, a week or even a weekend. I lost a bunch on that gun but no one needs that kind of negative Karma in the duck blind. Looking for a 28 SxS now to replace it. In the mean time the Rizzini will be my go to 28 ga.

Hi Tom, good to hear you boys are tearing 'em up with the little gun, I suppose that's next on my to-do list. Great picture and story about your grandson, he's a crack shot! Killed a double, with the 28 no less, how old is he? Us old timers will have to pick up the pace to keep up with this one! Hope to see you guys again soon.

Tom,
Enjoyed your enthusiasm for the 28,i have been shooting an 1100 sporting and franchi al 48 on pheasants and doves with good results if i do my part. I was wondering what non toxic loads you use for waterfowl, hulls, wads, etc.
thanks,Bill.
ps tell mark he needs to visit the barber he he.
