Guys ,

I have just finsished grassing the Kara for the next week but i want some ideas to make it look like a rock that we have so many of here in RI. Bob B has mentoined visqueen in black and i was thinking about that landscape cloth wire tied to a plastic mesh i bought at out local home improvement store, i will post pics up Friday it was to dark out after i finished tonight . Any ideas will be greatly appreciated

I saw pictures ( I can't remember where) of a blind a guy made for a bigger boat to blend in with rocks. He carved foam and burlapped it, then painted it to match the rocks. It was super slick, and blended in very well. The foam helps keep the weight down.

Just get some of the camo burlap you see in all the stores and cover it with a couple of them.

if you do decide the visqueen please post pictures....would love to see some

In high school i used to build speaker boxes for custom stereos. I used to paint most of the boxes with paint called flex stone. it was a mix of black and different shade of gray specs. Cant remember who made it but it would work great for coloring. Just a thought.

Dave,
the clear visqueen is for the open water. But for dark New England Costal Rock I would look for the black landscape fabric. They sell it in up to 20' foot wide rolls to stabilize soil on construction jobs. If you only need 6 foot wide for the KARA I bet you could find some scrap on a road job. You could paint seaweed on it and a seal to round out the effect. Or just go with the basic black\brown of all the granite sunkers that stick their heads up at low tide around here.

Bob ,

That is exactly what i was thinking about myself , iam going to take it and attach the fabric to the plastic mesh i have with wire ties and paint it up it should work fine . Thanks !!

This is pretty slick
Thats a pretty cool set up. Just dont try to hunt anywhere other than next to those rocks!! Is that painted foam making the rock shapes on that boat? Pretty cool rig.

David...

My black gilly fabric is under the workbench in that green plastic basket... just take it and use it... and try it... may as well, I won't be doing much hunting this year sadly...

bunch it up, it'll look awesome in that boat of yours...

I'll be around in RI this Thanksgiving, then I take off Saturday night for another fun week...

Dave:

Are you hunting inland, or on the coast? When we want our boats to look like rocks down on the salt, we hang rockweed off them instead of grassing them up. Works great on any kind of low profile boat at anything except the highest tides, and you can "seaweed up" a boat a lot faster than grassing it. The boat looks like a chunk of the weed-covered ledge it's sitting next to.

Some of the weed inevitably falls into the cockpit. After letting the rain and snow soak the salt out of it, it makes great mulch in the garden come spring.

A friend here in s.c. set oyster shells and sand on a boat he built. He wanted to look like a shell rake. The deck was rolled with epoxy and then a shells were pressed into place and sand sprinkled over top to fill the voids. I have not seen the finished product but have seen the birds he has carved and the rifles he crafted. His ideas and execution are usually spot on. If I were to try it I'd do a test spot on a 1'x 1' piece of ply. The trick would be trying not to make her weigh as much as a rock. Good luck.

Mike that is one sweet blind !!! I am guessing they are foam rocks or something like that ? It is a cool setup a little to high tech for what i was looking at but appreciate the post !!

Andrew . check your PM thanks alot for the offer !!! Safe travels pal!

Jeff , The aras we hunt are similar to what you guys hunt there in Maine it isa the New England coast so there is the blackish rocks wit the seaweed as well as the bird doo to !! I took a pice of Nursery shade cloth and cut it to attach to the Cacklers blind it works great to look like a rock this will be for the Kara Hummer i built w eplan to layout hunt with it for Brant this season , really looking forward to trying some layout hunting , you guys ahve a great idea as well . Thank you for tyhe tip have a great season and be safe all !!

Dave, make sure you guys grab my deeks, especially the brant and geese before the big hunt. I am envious, have fun and be safe. I'm not worried about the weather so much, it's Bob's jokes that may kill y'all.

Have fun.

Andrew

That has tons of potential for all kinds of camo that is not vegetation. Way cool looking. Might have to make a tuffa tower for my Kara.
