Guys ,

It has been a while since my last post here , but i was looking at my Kara the other day and i have decidied i would like to add some kind of folding oar locks , does anyone have any ideas on how to build them or location on kara ? I have a Kayak paddle that works ok but i would like to try attaching oars. Thanks !!

Morton,
I am thinking the same thing. But I am going fixed. I am going to try a 2x cut down thru the deck and epoxy tabbed to the hull below.

Bob i know we talked about doing that last year i think it would be better , i may even go with the fixed oar locks as well , i need to alos build a nice hard cover for the boat while i am at it .

Talk to you soon

Hi Dave,

I put oar locks on my KARA and found it a real PITA. I sat on a board across the combing and the oar locks were mounted ON the combing - WAY to low and were always bumping into my knees. Also, there wasn't enough distance between the handle of the oar and the oar lock so the balance was way off. If I were to do it again I would mount what ever oar locks I wanted as far outboard as possible and also raise them up. I have seen old time oar locks made of a piece of 1/2" gas pipe that could be screwed to a flange mounted to the deck and I think that might work much better.

I was looking at an old short pair of oars and thinking the same thing.
I think you could use Scott's design and address Pete's concerns. I had a
Sears john boat many years ago and experienced the problems Pete described.
I'll let you know how it works, John

You need to get your hands on a push paddle and try it while the weather is warm. I'm sure the Kara is planty stable, just need to bring your sea legs.

google images of the SOAR rowing frame for their small inflatable canoes. They have two styles. One is a frame across the two tubes, the other is a frame set with no cross piece. You could build a wide seat with pipe pieces way out on each edge much like a raft rowing frame. It would be hard to store while hunting.

For a KARA I would consider building a set of folding oar locks like on the BBSBs. Concept plans are in Taylor's waterfowling book with the other boat plans. Make them tall enough to fold out wide with a brace between the upright and the cockpit edge. The hinge would be a pin through two deck mounted blocks, or a gate hinge that allowed the wing/oar lock piece to rest on the deck. Adjusting the wing/oar lock piece up and down on the gate hinge would allow some height and width adjustment, but not a lot.

Hi Scott ,

Great idea for the oar locks !!!! Thanks for posting maybe i will build a set to try on the hummer , as far as stripers it has been hit or miss for me the reel nd rod bussiness has gotten a little crazy , so that stops me from getting out as much as i would , i did manage to drag in a 28 inch fish Sunday morning . Hope all is well with you and the family
